Nevada County Declares Local Health Emergency to Increase Coronavirus Response Resources

Nevada County is declaring a local health emergency and local emergency in response to the emerging, rapidly evolving situation and increasing spread of novel coronavirus and COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus. There are no known cases of coronavirus in Nevada County currently.

"Nevada County Public Health has ramped up preparedness activities as we've seen COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel coronavirus, spread in California, and diagnosed most recently in Placer County," said Jill Blake, Nevada County Public Health Director. "These declarations enhance Nevada County's ability to proactively respond to local needs if or when a confirmed coronavirus case happens in Nevada County."

The emergency declarations allow the County access to additional resources such as mutual aid, financial reimbursement and increased coordination with state and local partners. The local and health emergencies will be considered for ratification by the Board of Supervisors at their March 10th meeting next week.

Public Health Launches 211 Call Center and Updated Website to Encourage Community Preparedness

Coronavirus is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and Nevada County Public Health will provide local, updated information at www.mynevadacounty.com/coronavirus. Public Health has also activated Connecting Point's Call Center to answer community questions. Dial 2-1-1 or 833-DIAL211 (833-342-5211) to talk with a call center representative.

Public Health is also preparing for the possibility of local, sustained community transmission by reaching out to local health care providers and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, first responders such as fire and law enforcement agencies, the local business community and the public to encourage everyone to think about what their own preparedness plan looks like.

Community Initiative Funding RFP for Family Self-Sufficiency Programs

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors, through the Adult & Family Services Commission (AFSC), anticipates the authorization of funding to facilitate projects/programs that address the key findings and recommendations identified in the 2020-2021 Community Action Plan through the issuance of Community Initiative Funds (CIF). 

The AFSC is soliciting Request for Proposals (RFP) from qualified non-profit applicants, designed to promote the statewide priority of Family Self-Sufficiency identified in the 2020-21 Community Action Plan by mitigating root causes of poverty and ameliorating conditions of extreme poverty, for low-income Nevada County households.

March 10th Board Meeting Preview

Board of Supervisors meetings typically take place on two Tuesday's each month. Unless otherwise noted, at the beginning of each meeting, the public can address the Board on items that don't appear on the agenda but are of public interest and are within the jurisdiction of the Board. Tuesday's March 10th meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Chambers at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in Nevada City.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Ken Cutler will be presenting a report on the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. Follow Dr. Cutler's presentation, the Board will consider a local emergency declaration from the Office of Emergency Services and a local health emergency declaration from the Public Health Department for ratification. The emergency declarations allow the County access to additional resources such as mutual aid, financial reimbursement and increased coordination with state and local partners.

Afterwards, the Board will proclaim March 2020 as "Brain Injury Awareness Month" in Nevada County.

Later, following the consent calendar and business for the Nevada County Sanitation District 1, the Board will consider a Resolution approving Public Works Capital Improvement Plan 2020 Annual Update. At 1:30 p.m. the Board will be touring Nevada County's Operations Center Project at 12350 La Barr Meadows Road in Grass Valley. The public is welcome.

Nevada County Superior Court Seeks Volunteers For the 20/21 Grand Jury 

The Superior Court of California, County of Nevada is seeking applications from Nevada County citizens interested in an opportunity to serve on the 2020-2021 Grand Jury. The Grand Jury's one-year term begins on July 1, 2020 and ends on June 30, 2021.

In order to meet the minimum qualifications for service on the Grand Jury, applicants must be United States citizens who are 18 years of age or older and who have resided in Nevada County for a minimum of one year immediately prior to becoming a grand juror. Service on the Grand Jury requires a substantial investment of time, usually 40-50 hours per month. Additional information and applications for Grand Jury service are available by contacting the Grand Jury at (530) 265-1730, or by visiting the Nevada County Superior Court website. The application deadline is Friday, May 1st by 5:00 p.m.

Mosquito Season and Outdoor Activities

Spring and Summer bring great weather for outdoor activities along with mosquitoes.  Our winter provided plenty of rainfall that created a multitude of breeding sites for mosquitoes and the expectation is the mosquito population will be very prolific this year.  

The Nevada County Environmental Health Department Vector Control Program will be holding Mosquito Fish Giveaways in Grass Valley or Nevada City on April 30th, May 14th, May 28th, June 11th, and June 25th.  All giveaways will be held from 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m. Both locations are drive-thru pick-ups only, please do not park and walk up to get fish.

Revenue and Collection Recovery Specialist

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. Nevada County is hiring a Revenue and Collection Recovery Specialist to lead a case load involving the collection of money owed to the County. These debts are result of current or delinquent property taxes or money owed from court-ordered debt. The position collects and records property taxes, court-ordered fines and fees, and diversion and restitution, monitors transactions to ensure that all are performed in compliance with local, state and federal guidelines, and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements include graduation from high school/possession of GED certificate, plus an Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Accounting, Finance; or a related degree and two years of experience performing journey-level administrative, accounting, or general business work. Experience in a setting involving extensive public contact, heavy phone usage, and customer service is desired.
