Sugarloaf Pilot Program for Addressing HomelessnesAs we enter into fire season, community concern is rising about the possible threat of a wildfire inadvertently started by people who are homeless and camping in the woods. In addition, homeless individuals remain at high risk for contracting COVID-19 due to their lack of access to clean water as well as their many underlying health issues. To address these concerns, a coalition has been formed that includes the Health and Human Services Agency Nevada City Police Department, Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Hospitality House, Sierra Roots and other partner community organizations. This coalition recently launched a pilot program to test the effectiveness of an intensive, short-term intervention with cohorts of campers. Due to the specific concerns about encampments on Sugarloaf Mountain in Nevada City, the pilot was launched with this group of campers.
