Office of Emergency Services Providing No Cost Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Small Businesses

The County of Nevada Office of Emergency Services (OES) is offering local small business owners, with 25 employees or less, a 30-day supply of masks and hand sanitizer for each employee at no cost. This personal protective equipment (PPE) has been made available to California small businesses through the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) in collaboration with the Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA).

Relief Fund

Nevada County Relief Fund Provides $200,000 in Second-Round Grant Awards 

The Nevada County Relief Fund announced its second round of grant awards, totaling $200,000, supporting eleven "safety-net" nonprofits in western Nevada County, who are all providing a life line to our neighbors most in need, and twenty-five small businesses from throughout the county heavily impacted by COVID-19. 
 
The Relief Fund received 102 applications from small businesses for its micro-grants up to $5,000 each, and over two dozen applications for the "safety-net" grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 each. The combined requests totaled over $850,000. To date, the Relief Fund has raised $447,218 and disbursed $410,000.

Statewide Closure of All Bars and Indoor Operations of Restaurants, Wineries, Movie Theaters and Card Rooms

Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced additional statewide closures that impact Nevada County business operations.

Due to the current rates of disease transmission and the increase in hospitalization and ICU utilization, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has announced a statewide closure of indoor operations of dine-in restaurants (indoor closed; to-go, delivery, curbside and outdoor seating with distancing allowed, wineries and tasting rooms (indoor closed; outdoor seating with distancing allowed), movie theaters (indoor closed), family entertainment centers (indoor closed), zoos and museums (indoor closed), cardrooms (indoor closed), and closure of all brewpubs, breweries, bars, and pubs with a few exceptions.

The Yuba River Safety Cohort Launches Life Jacket Loaner Program

The South Yuba River sees 800,000 visitors a year; if you’ve driven by a crossing this summer, you have seen packed parking lots and busy beaches.  Accidents at the river happen every day and a group of Nevada County government agencies and local nonprofits, known as the Yuba River Safety Cohort, have teamed up to keep our river community safe this summer with loaner life jackets stations and free bandanas.

Nevada County Supervisors Support  the Nevada Fairgrounds

At its meeting on July 14, 2020 the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to adopt a Resolution proclaiming support for the Seventeenth District Agricultural Association, known as the Nevada County Fairgrounds. 

Help support the Nevada County Fairgrounds by participating in the Online Junior Livestock and Ag Mechanics Auction (August 13-15) or the Treat Street Drive-Through Event (TBA). The public can also support the Nevada County Fairgrounds by joining the Fairgrounds Foundation.

Successful E-Commerce Business Ignitor Course Returns to Help Local Businesses

In the wake of COVID-19, Rebound Nevada County along with Sierra Commons, Sierra Business Council and the Nevada County Economic Resource Council launched the free E-commerce Business Ignitor Course, which was primarily geared towards local brick-and-mortar retailers who knew that adding online sales is critical to business operations going forward.

The course successfully helped sixteen local businesses start their own online shopping sites and due to the overwhelming success of the inaugural program, a second class is now being offered for small businesses and local entrepreneurs interested in establishing an online retail presence or launching an online retail business.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sacramento Section is pleased to announce that the Purdon Road over Shady Creek Bridge Replacement Project has been selected as the 2019 ASCE Sacramento Section Bridge Project of the Year. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sacramento Section is also pleased to announce that the Combie Road Corridor Improvements Project has been selected as the 2019 ASCE Sacramento Section Transportation Project of the Year.

Nevada County Department of Agriculture Distributes nearly 40,000 Masks to Nevada County Agricultural Industry

Nevada County acknowledges the hard work and dedication of our local farmers and ranchers to bring local healthy products to our table. Nevada County also recognize the need to ensure that our farmworkers and employers, who provide this essential service, are safe and protected during the COVID-19 crisis. In cooperation with California Department of Food and Agriculture, California Department of Pesticide Regulation and CalOES, the Nevada County Department of Agriculture was able to secure nearly 50,000 surgical masks and almost 1,000 N95 respirators to be distributed to the Agricultural Industry throughout Nevada County.

U.S. Drought Monitor

Drought in the State of California

This week, USDA declared drought disasters for Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba Counties, along with the counties contiguous to these.

This declaration means that producers may be eligible for emergency loans. According to the USDA news release:

“[Producers] who suffered losses due to recent drought may be eligible for emergency loans.”
“The deadline to apply for these emergency loans is Feb. 16, 2021. FSA will review the loans based on the extent of losses, security available and repayment ability.”

“FSA has a variety of additional programs to help farmers recover from the impacts of this disaster. FSA programs that do not require a disaster declaration include: Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program; Emergency Conservation Program; Livestock Forage Disaster Program; Livestock Indemnity Program; Operating and Farm Ownership Loans; and the Tree Assistance Program.”

“Farmers may contact their local USDA service center for further information on eligibility requirements and application procedures for these and other programs."

Friendship-NEO

Merger of the Friendship Club and NEO will Expand Nevada County Youth Services

The Friendship Club and NEO (New Events and Opportunities) have announced their merger expected to be completed by the end of August, a step that will enhance their capacity to meet the ever-increasing needs of youth in Nevada County.

“The Friendship Club and NEO have extensive experience working with youth, their families and the community,” Jennifer Litton Singer said. “Joining together is part of a focused effort to ensure young people have hope, opportunity and the capacity to succeed.”

Youth are facing more challenges in this modern world. By coming together, the organizations will be stronger and able to serve more youth in better ways. The Friendship Club and NEO will meet the needs of several hundred youth every year. Youth in the community can use one or a combination of the programs, receiving services in numerous ways.
