Continue to be COVID Safe: Help Nevada County Reach the Orange Tier Next Week

On August 31st, the State introduced a new tiered framework that connects the level of openness of business sectors to COVID-19 conditions on the ground. Nevada County was initially placed in the red “Substantial” tier, but Nevada County remains on the cusp of the orange “Moderate” tier which would allow some businesses to safely increase the capacity in facilities. The soonest Nevada County could advance to the orange “Moderate” tier is September 22nd, but only if we meet the necessary criteria for two consecutive weeks.

"The ability to move forward depends on all of us staying the course - social distancing, masking, hand washing, and minimizing social mixing between households,” said Interim Public Health Officer Dr. Richard Johnson. “If we demonstrate less illness in our community in the days to come, we will be able to loosen restrictions on businesses. Let’s keep doing the right thing together!"

National Preparedness Month: Wildfire Evacuations

As wildfires in California set new records each year it is important to stay prepared in case of emergency. September is National Preparedness Month and is a great time to revisit your readiness. The Nevada County Sheriff, as well as the Grass Valley, Nevada City and Town of Truckee Police Departments, have all installed sirens on their patrol cars and will only use them for evacuations. Familiarize yourself with the sound and immediately initiate your evacuation plan if you hear it. The Hi-Lo Siren means it is time to immediately evacuate. Learn more at www.ReadyNevadaCounty.org/HiLoSirens.

This year, the Sheriff's Office also launched a new evacuation tag program. When evacuating it is important to remember to place your evacuation tag in a highly visible place such as a door, reflective address sign, mailbox, fence, or gate. These tags will help first responders swiftly identify which homes have been evacuated so they can focus their attention on those who still need help. These tags are free and may be found in a number of locations throughout Nevada County. The number one priority during an evacuation order is to evacuate, if you can't find or forgot to place your evacuation tag please do not go back and look for it. During wildfire season, it is important to be prepared and have your go-bag ready as well as find your five. Learn more on evacuation tags here:

Gregory J. Diaz

Gregory Diaz: Elections Question & Answers

I strongly encourage voters to stay home and vote by mail in this election. It is the first General Election to be conducted during a dangerous pandemic of this magnitude. I also urge voters to put their completed ballots in the mail by October 27th, seven days prior to Election Day on November 3rd.

News reports indicate the postal service may be stretched to accommodate a large surge of mail-in ballots. Nevada County voters have a ready alternative: 22 election drop boxes located across the county. For additional information, including the full Q & A series visit the Nevada County Elections website.
