Tips for Celebrating Halloween During COVID-19

To help us celebrate Halloween safely this year while limiting the spread of COVID-19, Nevada County Public Health is sharing guidance to have a COVID safe Halloween.

Many of us love celebrating Halloween every year and although we won’t be able to celebrate as we normally do (trick-or-treating is strongly discouraged along with traditional Halloween parades, trunk-or-treat, and other activities where people are outside of their own yards, home and/or cars with people from other households), Nevada County Public Health has worked to include other creative ideas that will help in your creative planning and safer celebration.

Find Your Five

Find Your Five Emergency Allies

Nevada County Arts Council and the County of Nevada are taking the threat of fire to a new level in helping to prepare local artists and arts organizations.

Eliza Tudor, the Council’s Executive Director, says, “With a creative community comprising hundreds of artists, each one of us needs a little help creating a plan. Who should we call in the event of an emergency close to home – and who should we alert in letting others know of imminent danger?”

Riding on the success of Ready Nevada County, an awareness campaign of the Office of Emergency Services (OES), Nevada County Arts Council teamed up with the County to create special Find your Five cards which would appeal to artists and creatives. The idea is increase preparedness by sharing plans with five trusted “Emergency Allies” – and do the same for others.

Sheila Cameron, in her role of media consultant for Ready Nevada County and artist, says, “It’s no different for artists, we have to plan not only for our family and loved ones, but for the most precious elements of our livelihoods, whether it’s our studios, our instruments, our canvasses or our equipment. With a little forethought, many things can fall into place.”

Nevada County Counts

Census Self-Response Period Has Been Extended to Oct. 31

The head of the U.S. Census Bureau said that the agency is complying with a judge's order for the 2020 census to continue through the end of October, suspending a Sept. 30 deadline for ending the count. The ruling also suspends a Dec. 31 deadline for turning in numbers used to determine how many congressional seats each state gets in a process known as apportionment. By doing this, the deadlines reverted back to a previous Census Bureau plan that had field operations ending Oct. 31 and the reporting of apportionment figures at the end of April. As of now, the original Census end-dates apply, but the future remains unclear. The Trump administration on Wednesday filed an emergency request to the Supreme Court, again seeking to halt the 2020 Census count.

Annual “Our Community Aging and Disability Conference Webinar Series” – “Social and Emotional Wellbeing” Launches Friday, October 9th!

Loneliness is sometimes a fact of modern life and more than three in five Americans reported feeling lonely in a poll by Cigna Insurance in January of 2020.  This situation is made more challenging lately by the enforced isolation of COVID-19.  And loneliness can affect our physical and emotional health, by increasing stress, altering brain function, increasing risk of heart problems and stroke, triggering depression and suicidal thoughts, and causing or worsening substance abuse.

This Friday, October 9, from 12:30-2:00pm, the Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) of Nevada, Sutter and Yuba Counties in partnership with the Falls Prevention Coalition of Nevada County will launch the third in the  2020 Our Community Aging and Disability Conference Webinar series “Social and Emotional Wellbeing”.
This Friday’s webinar will feature Priya Kannall, Mental Health Services Act Coordinator for Nevada County, and Maureen Gerecke, Friendly Visitor Coordinator at FREED. They will discuss the health risks associated with loneliness and isolation and will provide tools for getting connected. Participants will learn about the "Let's Talk Nevada County" program and other resources, both local and online, that can be accessed to help improve connection to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The second webinar in the series, presented on October 16th will feature Anastacia Knight, MSW, Community Social Outreach with the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation, and Diane Miessler, RN, Nevada County Senior Outreach. This webinar will explore how to deal with emotions as we try to adhere to public health recommendations for social distancing. This webinar will cover depression; what it is, what causes it, and what you can do about it.

The third webinar in the series, presented on October 23rd will dive into online resources for exploring existing interests, learning new skills, traveling to new destinations, playing games, making new friends, listening to music, storytelling, sharing new experiences virtually and more. All webinars are from 12:30 to 2:00 PM.
