Nevada County moves into the State’s Purple Tier with a rapid rise in local COVID-19 cases

Nevada County Moves into the State’s Purple Tier

Nevada County has seen a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases, with over six times as many new cases in the second week of November compared to the second week of October. Monday, the State announced that Nevada County’s COVID-19 data meets the most restrictive Purple “Widespread” Tier that will reduce the capacity and increase restrictions for local businesses. The State’s tiered framework connects the level of openness of business sectors to COVID-19 conditions on the ground.

Nevada County Public Health reminds residents to continue practicing social distancing, masking, hand washing, and minimizing social mixing between households. Even if you are mildly symptomatic, please stay home and don’t assume it is allergies or a cold. California has also issued a travel advisory alongside Oregon and Washington to discourage non-essential travel over the holidays, encourage staying local and ask that those that choose to travel self-quarantine for 14-days after returning.

COVID-19 Holiday Tips

Tips for a Healthier Holiday Season

Holidays usually mean gathering with friends and extended family, attending parties, hosting dinners, traveling, and celebrating time-honored customs. But some holiday activities promote congregating and mixing of households, which increase the risk of transmitting COVID-19.

The spread of COVID-19 is increasing across the country and in California as colder weather drives more people indoors. Reduce your risk this holiday season. Follow guidance from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and plan safer celebrations.

Holiday Tips

Get Tested

Get Tested for COVID-19

Testing is highly recommended for those who are symptomatic. While we are experiencing this surge in new COVID-19 cases and working on increasing our testing capacity, Nevada County Public Health would like to encourage those who are not symptomatic and have not knowingly been exposed to COVID to consider temporarily delaying getting tested to allow for testing of those who are symptomatic or have a known exposure to another diagnosed with COVID-19.

During this recent surge in COVID-19 cases, appointments at local OptumServe testing sites been booked up to a week in advance. Residents may schedule an appointment at other nearby OptumServe sites in other counties or may contact their primary care physician about other options.

Stay at Home Order

State Issues Limited Stay at Home Order to Slow Spread of COVID-19

In light of an unprecedented, rapid rise in COVID-19 cases across California, Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced Thursday a limited Stay at Home Order requiring generally that non-essential work, movement and gatherings stop between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. in counties in the purple tier. The order will take effect at 10:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21st and remain in effect until 5:00 a.m. December 21st. This is the same as the March Stay at Home Order, but applied only between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and only in purple tier counties that are seeing the highest rates of positive cases and hospitalizations.

“The virus is spreading at a pace we haven’t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge. We are sounding the alarm,” said Governor Newsom. “It is crucial that we act to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations before the death count surges. We’ve done it before and we must do it again.”

The Nevada County Community Library has purchased 40 mobile wifi hotspots with grant funding from the Network of the National Library of Medicine for lending to library cardholders for at-home use.

This project will help to bridge the digital divide experienced by Nevada County residents who cannot afford traditional internet access at home or for whom home internet service is simply not available. Those who are interested in checking out a hotspot device may place one on hold through the online catalog or by calling their local branch. Borrowers will be notified when their hotspot hold is available and should call to schedule their pick-up same as any other hold.

Nevada County Community Library Suspends Reopening Plans Due to Rise in COVID-19 Cases

The Nevada County Community Library will no longer be moving forward with its plans to reopen its Truckee, Madelyn Helling, and Grass Valley locations for in person services due to a rapid rise in COVID-19 cases in Nevada County. The opening of these locations was dependent on Nevada County remaining in the Moderate Orange Tier as designated by the State of California as well as maintaining the safety of staff and patrons. With the recent increase in COVID-19 cases, library staff determined the safest option for the community will be to pause reopening plans at this time.

“We are very saddened to have to suspend our reopening plans and I am sure our patrons will be as well,” notes County Librarian, Nick Wilczek “But, we also know that the safety of our community comes first.”

Nevada, Yuba, Placer and Sierra Counties Burn Suspension Lifted

Effective Monday, November 16th, at 8:00 a.m. the burn suspension in Nevada, Yuba, Placer and Sierra Counties was lifted. CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit Chief Brian Estes is formally cancelling the burn suspension and advises residents they may resume burning on permissible burn days. Agriculture burns within the State Responsibility Area must be inspected by CAL FIRE prior to burning until the end of fire season. Inspections may be required for burns other than agriculture burns. This can be verified by contacting your local Air Quality Management District.

Cooler temperatures, higher humidity and winter weather have helped to begin to diminish the threat of wildfire. Property owners and residents are asked to use caution while conducting debris or agriculture burns, follow all guidelines provided, and maintain control of the fire always. Individuals can be held civilly and/or criminally liable for allowing a fire to escape their control and/or burn onto neighboring property.
