Nevada County Introduces Dr. Scott Kellermann as Public Health Officer 

Beginning January 1, 2021, Dr. Scott Kellermann will be joining the County of Nevada as Public Health Officer. While Dr. Kellermann will begin his role as Public Health Officer on the 1st, his contract will formally come before the Nevada County Board of Supervisors at their January 12th meeting to officially appoint him to the vital public health role.

“I look forward to engaging in public health in Nevada County, particularly with an immunization campaign to end the current COVID-19 pandemic,” said incoming Public Health Officer Dr. Kellermann. “I look forward to giving back to Nevada County the kindness and generosity that has been shown to me.”

Nevada County Remains in Stay Home Order

Nevada County Remains in Regional Stay Home Order

Nevada County continues to be under the State's Stay Home Order along with neighboring counties in the Greater Sacramento region. According to the State's latest COVID-19 facts, the Greater Sacramento region’s daily current ICU capacity numbers have been relatively consistent at approximately 14%, however early projections over the next four weeks show ICU capacity is likely to drop. Therefore, the order will likely be extended for the Greater Sacramento region. Official ICU projections for the Greater Sacramento region will be posted on January 2nd based on the January 1st projections that will be run today and then the region’s official status will be known.

To protect our essential and healthcare workers, first responders, vulnerable residents and businesses, please stay home except for essential needs. A few weeks after a holiday, Nevada County typically sees a spike in new COVID-19 cases. Individual action leads to collective mitigation and we thank Nevada County residents who remain diligent about wearing a mask, social distancing, avoiding gatherings and staying home when sick. Nevada County COVID-19 Business Task Force Monthly Webinar

While the COVID-19 pandemic impacts every sector of our community, we recognize that our small businesses have been asked to make great sacrifices to comply with public health and safety guidelines to protect their staff and customers. The County formed the “Nevada County COVID-19 Business Task Force” last spring to support our local businesses. At the upcoming January 6th Business Task Force webinar, County staff, in partnership with the Sierra Business Council, will provide the latest updates on public health guidelines as well as vital information about available local, state, and federal small business resources such as grant and loan programs.

Starting January 6th, in-coming Board Chair Dan Miller and Supervisor Ed Scofield will co-host the monthly Business Task Force webinars. Business Task Force webinars take place on the first Wednesday of the month at 3:00 p.m. Advanced registration is required.

US Small Business Administration

SBA Extends COVID Economic Injury Disaster Loan Application Deadline through December 31, 2021

The U.S. Small Business Administration announced that the deadline to apply for the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program for the COVID-19 Pandemic disaster declaration is extended to December 31, 2021.  The deadline extension comes as a result of the recent bipartisan COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress and enacted by President Trump on December 27th.

“Following the President’s declaration of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the SBA has approved over 3.6 million loans through our Economic Injury Disaster Loan program nationwide,” Administrator Jovita Carranza said. “The EIDL program has assisted millions of small businesses, including non-profit organizations, sole proprietors and independent contractors, from a wide array of industries and business sectors, to survive this very difficult economic environment.”

Winter Driving Safety

Travel Impacts This Weekend - Next Week Due to Multiple Winter Storms

National Weather Service Sacramento is forecasting moderate to heavy mountain snow in the northern Sierra region. Motorists conducting essential travel are being alerted to a series of storms which will bring impactful winter weather across Northern California this weekend into next week. Essential mountain travel is expected to become difficult by the afternoon and evening on Sunday, January 3rd, and continue through early next week. If traveling in the mountains, carry chains, extra warm clothing, food and water, and be prepared for travel delays. 

Travel conditions are expected to be difficult with the potential for heavy snow. Total snow accumulations of 8 - 18 inches are possible above 5,500 - 6,000 feet, falling to 3,500 - 4,500 feet late Monday with localized amounts of up to 2 feet over peaks. If essential travel is planned at higher elevations, it is critical to prepare for a significant amount of snow, sleet or ice accumulations.

Nevada County Board of Supervisors Seal

Board of Supervisors’ Swearing-In Ceremony, Monday, January 4th 

With the New Year, 3 out of 5 Supervisors will be starting new terms. Members of the Board are elected on a non-partisan basis to serve four-year terms. Supervisors from District III and IV are elected in gubernatorial (state governor) election years; whereas Supervisors from District I, II and III are elected in presidential election years.  Additionally, the Chair and Vice Chair are selected annually by majority vote of the Board of Supervisors.

District I Supervisor Heidi Hall, District II Supervisor Ed Scofield and incoming District V Supervisor Hardy Bullock will be sworn on Monday January 4th at 10:00 a.m. Pursuant to Governor Gavin Newsom's Executive Order pertaining to the convening of public meetings in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swearing-In Ceremony will be held remotely due to the regional Stay Home Order. This ceremony will be broadcast live on Nevada County Media Channel 17 in the Western County and on Suddenlink Channel 78 in the Eastern County and can be viewed live through the web. Closed Captioning is available for hearing impaired viewers.

On the following week, at the first regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Supervisors, Tuesday January 12th, 2021, starting at 9:00 a.m., the Board will elect the Chair and Vice Chair for 2021.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Free Christmas Tree Recycling 

Recycle your Christmas tree for free at several locations in Western Nevada County! Trees can be disposed of in your Waste Management green waste collection service by cutting the tree into three foot sections and placing them in the green waste cart, or bring your tree to one of the five Western Nevada County locations to recycle them. Please remember, trees must be free of ornaments, lights or metal stands and un-flocked.  Take advantage of free Christmas tree recycling and help keep Nevada County litter free.

Due to the New Year’s Day holiday, Waste Management of Nevada County will not operate any collections on Friday, January 1st. If your collection day falls on or after New Years Day, it will be delayed one day.

Virtual Night of Giving

Community Comes Together for Virtual Night of Giving

The 15th annual Night of Giving took place virtually this year on Saturday, December 19th, with attendees streaming the event from home to raise awareness and support for Hospitality House. Thousands of people watched from the shelter’s website, Facebook page, YouTube channel and on Public Access television, but more than just watching, the community responded.

Throughout the evening, online and phone-in donations were received, and thanks to angel donors who offered a triple match donation incentive to inspire deeper giving, just over $60,000 was raised to help homeless men, women, children, seniors and Veterans in need.

Happy Holidays to you and yours! All administrative County offices will be closed on  Friday, January 1st, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. Public safety and Sheriff's patrol services will continue as normal. Normal business hours for other offices will resume on Monday, January 4th.
