County Opens New Vaccine Clinic in Grass ValleyThis week, the County of Nevada will launch a COVID-19 vaccine clinic in the Whispering Pines business park in Grass Valley. Vaccinations at the Whispering Pines clinic are by appointment only. Space for the clinic is being provided by Dignity Health’s Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital with support from the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation. Internet service for the site was donated by Smarter Broadband and local artist Kathy Wronski has livened up the space with her vibrant paintings. The new Whispering Pines clinic is designed for ease of access. It’s all on one level, there is plenty of parking, and we have volunteers to assist. There is a comfortable waiting area where patients will spend fifteen minutes under observation after getting their shot. Public Health staff will manage the clinic and provide nurses to administer vaccinations. The State of California is also assigning four additional nurses and five administrative support staff to the effort.

New Creative Licensing Solutions for the Food IndustryThe Environmental Health Department (DEH) is pleased to announce the kickoff of Platform Kitchen Operations (PKO) designed to benefit permitted food entrepreneurs through these uncertain and trying economic times. This new model allows Platform Kitchen Operators to team up with and work out of permitted commercial kitchens within Nevada County. This collaborative approach brings new opportunities for both established commercial kitchens, existing caterers/temporary food facilities, and new fledgling entrepreneurs.
The PKO program launched on Monday, February 8th, 2021. “The PKO process came about when Environmental Health Staff Member Nicole Johnson was researching different models in other California cities and counties,” says Amy Irani, Environmental Health Department Director. The program model allows the Platform Kitchen Operator to operate in a permitted space during set hours, to store items there, and run a pick-up or delivery-only model business. No dine-in seating will be permitted. The annual permit fee (November 1st to October 31st) for PKO is $288.30 with additional fees for the application and initial inspection. The reduced start-up costs help the Operator, a micro-business, thrive while bolstering the existing small business’s revenue loss due to the Pandemic.

Heavy Traffic, Delays Anticipated in the Sierra this Holiday WeekendCaltrans is advising motorists to expect intermittent winter driving conditions beginning today and heavy traffic in the Sierra area this holiday weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 4 p.m. today until 4 a.m Friday with about a foot of new snow expected at higher elevations and rain in the Valley. The foreceast for the weekend calls for a chance of snow Saturday, clear skies on Sunday and then a potential for more rain and snow on President’s Day Monday. Given anticipated periods of inclement weather, coupled with heavy traffic and chain controls, motorists are advised to expect lengthy travel delays in the Sierra. Ski resort parking lots are expected to fill quickly this holiday weekend given lower capacity requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic. Motorists should be prepared to be turned around when lots reach capacity and not block highways and local roads.

Make Sure the Only Sparks You Generate Are with Your Valentine, and Not from Metallic Balloons in Power LinesValentine's Day is only a few days away and couples across California are busy making elaborate romantic plans that entail...staying at home. But if those Covid-19-friendly, stay-at-home plans involve metallic balloons, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is reminding all of its customers to celebrate responsibly. If balloons—particularly metallic ones—come into contact with overhead power lines, they can disrupt electric service, cause significant property damage and potentially result in serious injuries. So, make sure to keep your Valentine's Day balloons inside and weighted down.
Last year, metallic balloons were the cause of 453 power outages across PG&E's service area in Northern and Central California, disrupting electric service to more than 250,000 homes and businesses.
