Outdoor Recreation in Nevada County

This beautiful season in our County is an excellent time to get outdoors and enjoy our county’s many recreational amenities, from trailheads to lakes to river crossings. Those outdoor amenities are the very reason many of us live here, and drive tourism into Nevada County, but we do need to take steps to protect our rivers and open spaces or risk seeing them “loved to death.”

That is why I am serving on both the South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort and the Recreation Ad Hoc Subcommittee – to coordinate with land managers and other stakeholders to prioritize programs and projects that alleviate the biggest impacts on our outdoor resources, such as sanitation, litter, emergency vehicle access, wildfire threat and more. Network Cables

Expanding High-Speed Internet Access

At the end of April, the Board of Supervisors awarded $500,000 in Last-Mile Broadband Grants to four local internet service providers (ISPs). “Last-mile” refers to the final leg connecting the broadband service provider’s network to the end-use customer’s home. As a result of those grants, broadband service will be offered to 440 households to support distance learning, remote working, and tele-medicine. Each of the four projects – two of which are in District 1 – offers a unique and innovative approach to expanding broadband in areas challenged by both remote geography and low population density. Severe Drought and Emergency Preparedness

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services recently launched a new zone-based evacuation tool called Zone Haven. Go to ReadyNevadaCounty.org/KnowYourZone to look up your evacuation zone (and those where you spend a lot of time, like work or school). In the event of a wildfire or other emergency, residents will be evacuated by zone. Make sure you are also signed up for Code Red alerts: MyNevadaCounty.com/CodeRed. Know your zone and sign up for Code Red alerts for a quick and safe evacuation!

All open residential burning has been suspended as of 8 am on May 24. Fire agencies are telling us that current fuel moistures are what they would normally expect to see in September or October. With the record low snowpack we saw this winter, combined with far less rainfall than average, we all need to be extra cautious with fire. Numerous recent fires have been caused by escaped burn piles. Read more...
Vaccinate Nevada County

COVID-19 and Vaccines

Over 80,000 vaccine doses have been administered here in Nevada County. That’s fantastic news. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, and you are 12 years old or older, there are now even more places to get your COVID-19 vaccine. Nevada County Public Health has launched a new vaccine clinic at the Sierra College campus in Grass Valley. With 210 appointments per day, five days a week, the clinic provides a significant expansion in appointment availability. It will administer the Moderna vaccine, which is available for anyone 18 years and over. Check out MyTurn.CA.Gov for vaccine appointments, where you can also find all available walk-in clinics. Please go get vaccinated and stay safe. Read more...

Circle of Hands

Local History and JEDI

Finally, I want to let you know about two subcommittees I serve on alongside District 5 Supervisor Hardy Bullock: the Historical Landmarks Commission Ad Hoc Subcommittee, and the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Subcommittee. The first is examining how to support County efforts to acknowledge and preserve this area’s history. And the second is collaborating with all three Nevada County cities/townships to develop a board resolution with our vision and actions to address local challenges with racial justice and equity. Both Subcommittees are tackling important issues that speak to the fabric of our community. Read more...
