COVID-19 Update

Nevada County's COVID Cases Lower and the Economy is Poised to Reopen

Nevada County Public Health and the State of California are working to make access to your COVID vaccine as easy as possible. As of this week, nearly 85,000 doses have been administered to Nevada County residents. The Nevada County Public Health department has administered over 22,000 of these vaccinations at various locations. This is more than 25% of all vaccines administered to Nevada County residents, compared to the 1,500 vaccines they typically administer annually prior to the pandemic.

The COVID-19 vaccine is widely available in Nevada County to all residents age 12 and over. Walk-in clinics are available at Dokimos in Nevada City, Whispering Pines in Grass Valley, and Sierra College in Grass Valley. Whether you’re unable to leave home for medical reasons or you just need a ride to your appointment, Californians can now request in-home vaccinations or transit assistance to get their COVID-19 vaccinations through MyTurn Vaccine scheduling system. Pop-up clinics are coming to a neighborhood near you, from Smartsville and Penn Valley, eastern Nevada County to western Nevada County.  Information on pop-up clinics, walk-in clinics, and in-home or transportation support are all available at myturn.ca.gov or by calling 1-833-422-4255 toll-free.

High Heat Risk

Significant Heat for the Memorial Day Weekend and Early Next Week

The National Weather Service - Sacramento is warning of a moderate to high heat risk moving into Memorial Day weekend and early next week. With the first heat event of the season in store for Memorial Day weekend into early next week make sure to take extra precautions to stay hydrated and cool by drinking plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty.

An early-season heat event will get underway over the Memorial Day Weekend, featuring well-above normal temperatures for much of northern California. From now through Friday, dry conditions are forecast with temperatures near or slightly above late May normals. On Saturday, a weak system may trigger a few afternoon showers/thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada, mainly around and south of Lake Tahoe. Elsewhere, dry and warming conditions are expected. By Sunday, high pressure will quickly build along and west of California, resulting in a significant warming trend that will peak around Memorial Day or Tuesday. Any travelers, hikers, campers, or outdoor enthusiasts with plans to spend time outdoors over the holiday weekend should prepare for excessive heat. Hot conditions may linger into next week Wednesday.

CAL FIRE Stresses Safety this Memorial Day Weekend

As we roll into the official start of summer, CAL FIRE is urging Californians to be extra cautious this Memorial Day weekend and take steps to help prevent wildfire, drownings, and other accidents. Since January 1st, CAL FIRE has responded to 2,265 wildfires and more than 195,000 other incidents.

“Approximately 95% of all wildfires in California are caused by human activity, and each year we see disasters that could have been prevented” said Chief Thom Porter, CAL FIRE director. “The dry conditions and increased temperatures throughout the state have created a situation where a fire could easily spark, so we ask everyone to be cautious as they enjoy their time outdoors.”

Reaching our Diverse River Community Better: Bilingual River Signage

This year, guests to Highway 49 and Bridgeport river crossings will be greeted with signs in both English and Spanish, a new communication initiative that’s part of the River Ambassador program, jointly led by the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) and California State Parks. The River Ambassador program is aimed at educating guests about River safety and etiquette. Having signage posted in both English and Spanish will help communicate more effectively to the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the South Yuba River each summer. It will also create a more welcoming environment for our increasingly diverse visitors.

“This is an exceptionally important year to have clear and effective communication at the river given the high fire danger in the South Yuba River canyon,” said Daniel Belshe, Community Engagement Manager. “We want to make certain everyone is aware of the fire ban—as well as parking regulations, the ban on glass, and the importance of packing out what you pack in so we can keep our communities safe this summer.”

Adopt-A-Road CDA Volunteer Day

Adopt-A-Road CDA Volunteer Day

The Community Development Agency (CDA) cleaned up our “adopted” LaBarr Meadows Road on Saturday, May 22, 2021. The effort comes at a critical time in the County’s effort to encourage litter pick-up, responsible recreation, and general stewardship of the Sierra foothills. Not only did participants from the agency’s team pick up 750 pounds of trash, they were welcomed by the community with waves, thumbs up, and general enthusiasm for the work being done.

Want to get involved? You can Adopt-a-Road through Nevada County’s Department of Public Works. Showcase your organization via sponsorship signs along that roadway, help keep our roadsides clean of litter, and strengthen team relationships through volunteering.
