River Fire Update

As of Friday afternoon, the River Fire has burned 2,600 acres and destroyed 88 structures. The fire is now 30% contained.

Evacuation warnings have been lifted in both Nevada and Placer counties. All evacuation orders remain in effect as of Friday afternoon. View a map of the evacuation zones at www.ReadyNevadaCounty.org/Zonehaven.

CalFire damage assessment teams are working with the building department and environmental health to collect data on structure and infrastructure damages.

Nevada County Relief Fund Seeks Donations for River Fire Survivors 

With over 4,000 people evacuated, 2600 acres burned, and 76 structures destroyed, the River Fire is only 15% contained as of Thursday evening with scores of homes still threatened. 

In response, the Nevada County Relief Fund’s Community Advisory Council established the “River Fire Fund” today to accept donations and will direct funds as we learn from our nonprofit and County partners where the needs are greatest.

Air Quality Health Advisory for Smoke & Ozone

The Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District (District) and the Public Health Departments of Nevada, Plumas, and Sierra Counties are extending a joint Air Quality Health Advisory due to the prolonged and widespread smoke from numerous wildfires, predominantly the Dixie Fire. Poor air quality (possibly reaching hazardous levels) is expected to persist as long as these wildfires are active. Smoke density and location will vary greatly, depending on fire behavior and weather conditions, with smoke settling in low areas at night.

Nevada County Library Ends Overdue Fine for Good

It’s official! The Nevada County Community Library has announced that it is no longer charging overdue fines.
This is a permanent move meant to remove financial barriers that may be keeping people from enjoying the library’s full benefits.   

“We are very excited about this and what it means for the community.” stated County Librarian, Nick Wilczek, “Patrons are now free to check out items without the worry of being penalized for returning them a few days late.”

Mobile Crisis Pilot in Eastern Nevada County

Nevada County and Placer County Behavioral Health have partnered with Sierra Mental Wellness Group to expand crisis services in the Truckee region. Starting on July 5, 2021, a full-time crisis worker is now based in Truckee to respond to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis at both Tahoe Forest Hospital and in the community, as opposed to the previous on-call model. Building on the success of the mobile crisis pilot in the Tahoe/Truckee region, the new crisis worker will be available to respond to crises in the community in collaboration with the Truckee Police Department, Placer County Sheriff’s Department, and Nevada County Sheriff’s Department. The new on-site crisis worker will be trained in crisis de-escalation techniques, as well as best practices around joint response to incidents with law enforcement.

Board of Supervisors August 10th Agenda Preview

Pursuant to Governor Gavin Newsom's Executive Order pertaining to the convening of public meetings in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the County of Nevada will hold its regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Supervisors from inside the Board Chambers. The Tuesday August 10th meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Chambers.
 
Please refer to page 11 of the agenda to find the ways you can provide public comment. Highlights on the agenda include but are not limited to the following. Please visit the link below for the full agenda:

District 5 Supervisor Hardy Bullock will present a resolution supporting Measure T: Wildfire Protection Measure for the purpose of reducing the risk of wildfire and improving local wildfire prevention, and providing a stable source of local funding for wildfire prevention and mitigation through a special tax in the amount of $179 per parcel within the boundaries of the Truckee Fire Protection District, for a period of eight years that shall be consolidated and come before the voters with the gubernatorial recall election on September 14, 2021.
 
Following the consent calendar, Chief Information Officer Stephen Monaghan will present a resolution proclaiming a Local Emergency in Nevada County due to the River Fire.

Next, the Board will discuss an Ordinance amending section 1.27 to Chapter VII Article I of the General Code of the County of Nevada pertaining to discharging a firearm.
 
During the afternoon session, Building Director Craig Griesbach will make a presentation and the Board will provide direction regarding implementation of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) pilot program specific to unpermitted commercial cannabis enforcement.
