FEMA Mobile Registration Intake Centers for River Fire Survivors

Placer and Nevada counties will continue their support for residents impacted by the River Fire with opportunities in both counties to connect with FEMA, CalOES and county representatives and apply for assistance. FEMA's Mobile Registration Intake Center will open at Chicago Park Elementary School on September 10th until 8:00 p.m. and September 11-12th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sierra Vista Community Center on September 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and September 12th from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.

Residents of either county may visit any of the centers for assistance. FEMA’s individual assistance program provides grants and other support programs to help eligible survivors that may include rent, home repair, home replacement, and other disaster-related needs such as childcare, medical, and dental expenses.

Environmental Health Department Finishes Phase I for the River Fire

Environmental Health Finishes Phase I of River Fire Clean-Up

The Nevada County Environmental Health Department and the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) have spent the last few weeks working tirelessly to remove hazardous waste from the 94 Nevada County properties affected by the River Fire.

Hazardous waste clean-up is led by Nevada County Environmental Health Program Manager David Huff. David’s work includes visiting each site and reviewing the property for hazardous debris with the DTSC team. This team has assessed 87 of the 94 Nevada County properties. Work was expected to be completed by Thursday, September 9th, and will wrap up Phase 1 of the household hazardous waste clean-up in the River Fire recovery process.

Nevada County Public Health Awarded National Accreditation

Jill Blake, Nevada County Public Health Director, announced today that the Nevada County Public Health Department has achieved national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). “It is truly an honor to be recognized nationally for meeting these very high standards of excellence,” Blake said.

The national accreditation program, jointly supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sets standards against which the nation's 3,000+ public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and performance. To receive accreditation, a health department must undergo a peer-reviewed rigorous assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds these quality standards and measures. Participation in the PHAB accreditation program is optional. Health departments that achieve PHAB accreditation join an elite group throughout the state and the nation.

New Health Order Reemphasizes School Implementation of Testing & Contact Tracing Programs

To support school administrators, Nevada County Public Health Officer Dr. Scott Kellermann has issued an order clarifying that State guidelines require all public, private, or charter schools in Nevada County intending to implement shortened or modified quarantine have a functioning testing and contact tracing program approved by the health officer. 

“Schools have the relationships, the resources, and the responsibility to provide for testing and contact tracing of their students,” Kellermann said. “The administrators of our schools are committed to working with Public Health to ensure that our children receive the great benefit of in-person education while learning in an environment free of COVID-19. Testing, contact tracing, and quarantining will safeguard our children while attending school.”

Naloxone / Narcan Available at No-Cost

No-Cost Naloxone/Narcan to Prevent Overdose Deaths

Nevada County Public Health Department is hearing reports from across California of accidental overdose deaths related to fentanyl-contaminated cocaine.

Naloxone is a drug used to reverse an opioid overdose, including overdoses due to fentanyl. It is available without a prescription. After a quick training, anyone can carry and administer naloxone to another person who has overdosed on opioids. Naloxone is available for free in Nevada County. Nevada County Public Health and Behavioral Health departments offer free naloxone and fentanyl test strips to the community. Call or text 530-388-6364 for details.

Vote in the September 14th Election

Vote in the September 14th Election

There is less than one week to vote in the Governor Recall Election.

Two additional Vote Centers in Grass Valley at the Gold Miners Inn and Higgins Lions Community Center will open this Saturday through Election Day, September 14th, in addition to the two already open at Eric Rood Center in Nevada City and the Truckee Town Hall. Vote by mail, drop-box, or in-person before or by 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14th.

District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall

District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall Appointed to NACo Policy Steering Committee

Nevada County District I Supervisor Heidi Hall was appointed to sit on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Public Lands Policy Steering Committee for 2021-2022. 

Supervisor Hall was appointed to the Public Lands Policy Steering Committee by the California State Association of Counties (CSAC). She serves as the representative for Nevada County and the Co-Chair of the CSAC Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Policy Committee and member of the CSAC Broadband Workgroup.  Supervisor Hall will serve alongside eight other county supervisors representing California, including Del Norte, Modoc, Inyo, Mariposa, and Mono counties. The core philosophy of the committee is based on the critical role that counties play in policy development, planning, and management of federal lands and serve as conveners by offering a local and detailed level of expertise on resource management issues.

Board of Supervisors September 14th Agenda Preview

Pursuant to Governor Gavin Newsom's Executive Order pertaining to the convening of public meetings in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the County of Nevada will hold its regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Supervisors remotely. The Tuesday, September 14th meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. Please refer to pages 9 and 10 of the agenda to find the ways you can provide public comment. At the start of the meeting, the Board of Supervisors will have a moment of silence for those who lost their lives during 9/11. Then, Supervisors will hear two community presentations and consider resolutions proclaiming 2021 as the 100th Anniversary of the Nevada Irrigation District and September 11-18th as the 24th Annual Yuba River Cleanup in Nevada County.
 
At 10:30 a.m., following the consent calendar and public comment, Supervisors will consider approving Interfaith Food Ministry and Gold Country Community Services Community Development Block Grants.
 
At 1:30 p.m., the Supervisors will recognize employees for the County's 20/21 Employee Recognition Program in the categories of Employee of the Year, Supervisor of the Year, Innovative Employee of the Year, Above and Beyond Employee of the Year, Multiplier Employee of the Year, Collaborative Employee or Team of the Year, and Rookie of the Year.

Watch the Town Hall on Visitor Impacts at the Yuba River

This Wednesday, September 8th, the South Yuba River Citizens League and YubaNet co-hosted a virtual town hall to discuss visitor impacts on the Yuba River and surrounding communities.

Over the past decade, visitation to the Yuba has increased dramatically, causing concern for river health. among community members. The South Yuba River Citizen’s League, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, State Parks, Bureau of Land Management, and Tahoe National Forest have all fielded numerous calls and emails from affected citizens and have worked together to propose measures to mitigate impacts. Job Openings at Nevada County: Behavioral Health Therapists

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

Nevada County's Health & Human Services Agency is currently seeking Behavioral Health Therapists to provide the following support to community members:

  • Assessment, treatment planning, individual and group therapy, collateral/parent counseling
  • Crisis intervention, case management, and documentation of services
  • Screening potential clients on the phone
  • Psychotherapy 
Services are provided in consultation with the clinical team and regional partners and outside agencies. Individuals who show patience, understanding, and caring in their dealings with others are highly valued. Other relevant personal traits include social skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and managing time effectively. The work is always interesting and provides opportunities for collaborative, creative problem-solving. We seek to hire caring individuals who bring a sense of humor and fun at the right time. We currently have Therapist openings for the following programs and services:
  • One full-time Therapist in Grass Valley to support our Quality Assurance Program, performing internal and external audits and program reviews.
  • One full-time, bilingual Therapist to provide direct services for English and Spanish-speaking children and adults in the Truckee offices. This position will be eligible for a Truckee differential and a bilingual differential. 
  • Several part-time, temporary Therapists to provide direct services in both our Children's and Adult divisions.
