Nevada County Awarded CAL FIRE Funding for South County Shaded Fuel BreakCAL FIRE recently announced that the County of Nevada Office of Emergency Services received grant funding to complete the South County Shaded Fuel Break. The total cost of the project is $1,038,230, with $952,610 provided by CAL FIRE and an in-kind match valued at $85,620. The project will treat 339-acres on 226 parcels, which will serve as a vital wildfire holding point and key evacuation route for residents. The project is a 150-foot-wide shaded fuel break along 9-miles on Buck Mountain Road, Lodestar Drive, and Brewer Road in the community of Alta Sierra.
The South County Fuel Break has been an important fuel modification endeavor for the CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer (NEU) Unit for several years and was included in both the 2019 and 2020 Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit Strategic Fire Plans. The County of Nevada Office of Emergency services has been pursuing funding for this project since December 2019.

Fire Weather Watch Sunday Evening through Tuesday morningNational Weather Service Sacramento has issued a Fire Weather Watch beginning Sunday evening through Tuesday morning for portions of Nevada County due to gusty north to northeast winds combined with low humidity and extremely dry fuels, which may lead to critical fire weather conditions. The strongest winds are expected Monday morning.
A Fire Weather Watch is issued up to 72 hours before fire weather conditions are expected to occur. A Red Flag Warning is issued when the conditions are expected to occur or are occurring within the next 24 hours. Fire Restrictions in the Tahoe National ForestThe USDA Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region will rescind the Regional Closure Order affecting all National Forests in California including the Tahoe National Forest on September 15th at 11:59 p.m.
To protect natural resources and provide for public safety, the Tahoe National Forest has revised fire restrictions and implemented a new, temporary closure order on dispersed camping and target shooting effective Thursday, September 16th, at 12:00 a.m. through November 1st.

The clinic is for adults and children 3 years of age and older, and will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the parking lot of Twin Cities Church at 11726 Rough and Ready Highway in Grass Valley.
The purpose of this drive-thru is to practice and evaluate response levels and preparedness of Public Health staff and community partners in the event of a large communicable disease outbreak or public health emergency. Supervisors Award $815,000 to Nonprofits to Expand Senior Food ServicesThe Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved two resolutions Tuesday awarding $465,000 to Interfaith Food Ministry and $350,000 to Gold County Senior Services from Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to support food distribution to low-income seniors.
The grant funding will expand the Gold Country Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels program to an additional 98 seniors currently on the waitlist, increase from one meal to two meals per day for 600 low-income seniors, provide shelf-stable meals for seniors during Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events and expands services to include seniors in the more rural areas of Nevada County. Interfaith Food Ministry will use the grant funding for the purchase of a generator to prevent food spoilage during a PSPS event and a commercial truck for food transportation.

Nevada County Human Resources Director Selected to Serve on CPAAC Board of DirectorsThe County Personnel Administrators Association of California (CPAAC) selected Nevada County’s Human Resources Director Steve Rose to serve on their Board of Directors. Steve has been Nevada County’s Human Resources Director for three years. During that time, he has led Nevada County’s Human Resources Department through significant process improvements and changes, garnering statewide recognition. Steve will serve on the CPAAC Board for three years as Secretary, Vice-President, and President, consecutively. Steve’s role on the CPAAC Board will be a first for Nevada County.
Steve began streamlining Nevada County’s internship program in May 2019. Since it began, the program has hosted over 55 interns who performed over 22,000 intern hours. Steve also leveraged $440,0000 in grant funding for the program. Participating interns have had a 67% job placement rate within the County organization and local employers, in addition to the program benefits for job seekers and local employers of developing local talent.

2nd Public Meeting Scheduled for HWY 49 ImprovementsNevada County Transportation Commission in coordination with Caltrans District 3 has been working to develop the next phase of improvements on Highway 49 between La Barr Meadows Road and the McKnight Way interchange. This future project examines options to eliminate the merge points and improve the highway to four lanes, which includes improvements such as the construction of northbound and southbound truck climbing lanes, auxiliary lanes, a 14’-22’ median or median with a barrier, 10’ shoulders, right turn lanes, and two at-grade access-controlled intersections with frontage roads to improve safety, traffic operations, goods movement, mobility, and operations during evacuation events.
Caltrans and NCTC are seeking public feedback on the proposed State Route 49 Corridor Improvement Project. Please join us for a virtual meeting and learn about how the project proposes to improve highway operations, mobility, and safety on Highway 49. During the presentation, community members will learn about the project alternatives, view displays and maps, and learn where they can review the draft environmental document, which is available for comment through October 8th. This project is scheduled to be built in three phases based on funding availability.
