Nevada County Presents Innovative ARPA Strategy and Broadband Leadership at CSAC Conference

Nevada County was well represented by Supervisors and staff this week at the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) Annual Conference. District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall, District 2 Supervisor Ed Scofield, District 5 Supervisor Hardy Bullock, and Board Analyst Jeff Thorsby attended. Supervisor Hall presented on Nevada County’s use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding and was recognized for her work on CSAC’s Broadband Working Group. Board Analyst Jeff Thorsby presented during a workshop on Nevada County’s countywide Broadband Environmental Impact Report initiative to increase local shovel-ready broadband projects.

This year’s meeting theme, “Lighthouse of Leadership,” exemplified the strength and determination that California’s Counties demonstrated as they led, and continue to lead, their communities through the pandemic, wildfires, and other challenges to emerge more resilient, connected, and strategic. County representatives from across California shared best practices, workshops on priority areas for counties, and key updates on legislative bills during the 3-day event.

CDFA Highlights Nevada County's Starbright Acres Family Farm

When giving thanks this time of year, it is important to recognize the work that small farmers do to provide robust produce year-round and to add resiliency to our community. This week, the California Department of Food and Agriculture recognized the work of local farm Starbright Acres Family Farm. Many farms in the area work with Grass Valley Farmer’s Market, Nevada City Farmer’s market and local vendors like BriarPatch Food Co-op to feed our community. They also support our nonprofit partners like Interfaith Food Ministry to help feed those in need.

“This work, supporting local farmers and their lifeblood, is what makes my team’s work so rewarding,” said Chris de Nijs, Agricultural Commissioner.

Public Health Officials Tracking Omicron Variant

On November 26, 2021, the World Health Organization classified a new COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.529, as a Variant of Concern and named it Omicron. On November 30th, the United States also classified Omicron as a Variant of Concern, and on December 1st, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed the first case of Omicron in the United States.

While there is still much to learn about the Omicron variant, we do know that it has many mutations in important areas of the virus that impact infectiousness and the ability for immune systems to protect from infection. Some of the mutations are concerning to scientists because they are very different from other variants previously detected. At this time, we don’t know if the Omicron variant causes more severe COVID-19 illness than other variants or how it might impact response to treatment. Public Health officials are tracking the variant and providing information to the public as it becomes available. For the most current information, see CDPH’s fact sheet on the Omicron variant.
