Winter Storm Update

There are currently 5,211 Nevada County PG&E customers without power. We are committed to keeping residents up-to-date as we enter day twelve of power outages caused by the December 27th winter storm. Please check in with neighbors who may be alone, remote, or need extra help and report unmet needs to 1-833-DIAL211. Dial 9-1-1 for life-threatening emergencies.

County Roads Open
All County roadways are open, and Nevada County Public Works has worked with contractors to assist in clearing populated private roads for emergency access.

Community Resource Centers

Two PG&E Community Resource Centers are open daily for residents without power. Nevada County Social Services staff are available at the Madelyn Helling Library Community Resource Center to connect individuals who have left their de-energized homes to resources.

Firewood Distribution

Seven firewood pick-up sites are available throughout impacted areas, from the Town of Washington to Alta Sierra. Over 160 cords of wood provided by PG&E have been distributed to residents. Residents are reminded only to take what is needed if they are without power and if firewood is their sole source of heat.

Showers and Laundry
Showers and laundry services are available for residents without power at the Eric Rood Center in Nevada City. Showers are open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Laundry can be dropped off throughout the day and picked up 24 hours later.

Propane Delivery
Propane has become an increasingly scarce resource through these recent outages. If you have less than 10% of your propane remaining and are relying on it as your sole source of heat, please report it to 1-833-DIAL 211. Nevada County is routing the information to the Western Propane and Gas Association to coordinate delivery.

Call to Action: Check-in on Neighbors Without Power and Help Report Unmet Needs to 211

During times of need, Nevada County residents have a history of coming together to support each other. This once-in-a-lifetime storm event calls upon us all to act. Last week, Nevada County sent a CodeRED Emergency Alert in hopes of reaching those that have been disconnected. We hope this will spur the community into action and connect vulnerable people to available resources.

Residents are encouraged to apply the “Find Your Five” principle used during fire season to check in on residents without power. If you can, please connect with at least five neighbors who may be alone, remote, or in need of extra help, and report their unmet needs to 1-833-DIAL211. The more connected we are as a community, the more likely we are to get accurate information in a timely manner that might help a neighbor survive an emergency.

Local Emergency Proclaimed Due to Winter Snowstorm

Nevada County's Office of Emergency Services declared a Local Emergency on Monday, December 27th, which went into effect immediately. Nevada County was the first impacted County to declare a Local Emergency and staff has been deployed nonstop--many working 24/7 on 12-to-14-hour shifts--plowing roads and responding to urgent community needs. Throughout the event, Nevada County has worked with CalOES to bring in outside resources such as a generator from Sacramento County to power an overnight shelter, a portable cell tower to give the Town of Washington emergency connectivity, five dump trucks to deliver firewood to five firewood distribution sites for residents in impacted areas, and more.

On December 30th, the Board of Supervisors held a Special Meeting to ratify the emergency proclamation. Ratification is a necessary formality, but it has not delayed the County's ability to access the outside resources needed to respond to this emergency event. Nevada County was also included in the California Governor’s State of Emergency declaration on December 30th.

Grow Healthy with More Fruits and Veggies from Nevada County WIC

Nevada County’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) families will continue to receive increased support for purchasing fruits and veggies. We are pleased that this temporary increase was recently extended through March 2022; breastfeeding women now receive $47/month, pregnant and postpartum women receive $43/month, and children 1- 5 years receive $24/month.

The increased fruits and vegetables benefit has a significant impact on the dietary quality of WIC families. Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables reduces the prevalence of chronic disease and strengthens the immune system. This increased benefit will allow families enrolled in the WIC program to buy and consume more healthy fruits and vegetables. Benefits are good for 30 days from the date they are issued.
