Priority Permitting and Fee Waiver for Winter Storm Damage

Priority Permitting and Fee Waiver for Winter Storm Damage

Residents with storm damage repairs will receive priority permitting and have local fees waived for repair permits through the Nevada County Community Development Agency (CDA) for serious repairs needed following the December 27, 2021 winter storm.

“The goal of these types of fee waivers and having an expedited permitting process is to help the community build back quickly in a cost-effective way. Our team is here to support the rebuilding efforts as efficiently as possible to help the community recover and heal,” said Craig Griesbach, the Building Department Director.

Green waste pile

Green Waste Disposal Options

The recent winter storm downed hundreds of trees onto County maintained roadways. Roads crews are actively working to remove the hazardous limbs and branches now piled alongside the 560+ miles of County maintained roads. Given the staggering amount of debris from the storm, we are also bringing in contractors to expedite the process.

Meanwhile, Nevada County's Office of Emergency Services is working with local partners and CalOES to identify funding and develop a long-term plan to assist residents with their green waste disposal. There are many ways that residents can address fallen debris on their private property:

  • Safely burn residential debris
  • Chip material
  • Order residential curbside pickup
  • Rent a large green waste dumpster
  • Compost leaves and pine needles
  • Hire a reputable contractor to assist with large tree removal

Human Resources Rolls Out Successful Reduced Time-to-Hire Process

Local governments have long faced recruitment challenges even before The Great Resignation. One of the most notable reasons the public sector has faced recruitment challenges is its recruitment process. Public agencies are known for long, slow, often complicated recruitment and selection systems that disincentivize job-seekers who can simply get picked up faster down the road. Fortunately for the County, Human Resources has been working on a solution to this issue. In 2019, Human Resources began in earnest to rebuild our recruitment process in response to our hiring managers’ interest in a recruitment process that was more flexible, less cumbersome and allowed for choice among better-fitting job candidates.

The outcome of the work? A recruitment process that reduces the time to hire from 130 days to 60 or less gives hiring managers more flexibility in candidate selection (while still maintaining merit principles) and appeals to applicants because of the quick turnaround time. More than just a faster process, the new system offers a win-win solution between Human Resources, the hiring department, and the job seeker.
