Greater Higgins Area Plan Project: Join the Discussion to Help Shape the Community March 2nd

Nevada County is developing an exciting plan to help guide future improvements for the Higgins Corner area in the South County region. The Greater Higgins Area Plan is a planning effort with two key goals: to establish a comprehensive future vision for the area integrating culture, commerce, and housing while supporting the unique community character and culture of the South County area, and to serve as a blueprint for future development.

As part of the project, the County is conducting an extensive community engagement process to hear from community members about goals and vision for the future of the Greater Higgins area. The second of four community workshops will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Zoom. The meeting will include a presentation, followed by a discussion in small groups.

Do You Know a Nevada County Veteran in Need of Hearing Aids? Auburn VA OPC Opens New Audiology Clinic

In the fall of 2020, the VA informed the veterans of Nevada County that our medical provider would change from the Reno VA Medical Center to our current provider at the Mather VA Medical Center. When this change was made it was promised that this would be a great benefit to the Auburn VA Outpatient Clinic (OPC), which is located off Bell Rd. This change benefited our local veteran community because the Mather VAMC can more fully support the services available at the Auburn OPC, increasing the quantity, quality, and accessibility of services in our area.

Recently, the Auburn VA OPC announced the opening of a new audiology clinic that increases veterans’ access to hearing health care, reduces travel distances for veterans who do not want to travel to Sacramento, reduces the stress of navigating Mather’s medical center, provides support for veterans’ caregivers, reduces the amount of time a veteran or caregiver needs to take for appointment travel, promotes immediate and convenient access to a specialist, and increases patient satisfaction.

YubaNet: Getting Ready for Peak Fire Season – Woodstoves, Chimneys, Roofs, Gutters and Screens

During recent wildfires, 90% of homes and buildings were first ignited by embers, not the actual fire. Embers are carried on winds ahead of a fire, eventually causing a fire to “spot” ahead of itself. Spotting can occur several miles ahead of the main fire! Once these embers land on or near your home, it’ll depend on the building materials and the landscaping (or lack thereof) around the structure how well your house will fare.

Ignition during a wildfire is the result of:

  • Embers (also called firebrands)
  • Radiant heat
  • Direct flame contact

Retrofitting your home with a Class A fire-rated roof, replacing vent screens with 1/8th mesh screens or slatted screens, enclosing eaves, replacing single-pane windows with double pane and screened windows are well worth the investment.
