Last Week to Complete "Need for Speed" Broadband Survey

Nevada County residents have just a week left to take the “Need for Speed” Broadband Survey. The County encourages all residents and businesses to participate in the survey, which will assess high-speed internet (or “broadband”) availability and reliability across the county.

So far, the survey has collected nearly 4,000 responses. More participation will give the County a better understanding of the issue.

“We need a precise snapshot of internet access in Nevada County. We know there is a need out there. Now we are asking for the public’s help to get an accurate picture of where the gaps in service are,” says Board Chair Sue Hoek.

The results of the survey will help the County prioritize new broadband projects, apply for funding, and advocate to elected officials and state regulators.

The survey, at www.mynevadacounty.com/broadband, takes less than 5 minutes to fill out and is available in both English and Spanish. Respondents who have internet access will be prompted to test their internet speed and provide the results. Those with slow speeds or no available internet at all are especially encouraged to participate.

Mobile TV Production Comes to Nevada County

Nevada County Media (NCM) and the Nevada County Library recently collaborated to transform the Library's Bookmobile into a mobile television production studio.

“Providing mobile live production has always been a priority. It just took us a while to include it responsibly,” stated Ramona Howard, Executive Director at Nevada County Media. "In 2019, we lost the independent company that was doing most of the live production in our community, and that left a big hole. Stepping into those shoes required several items to fall into place."

Nick Wilczek, Nevada County Library Director, said that he “loves that the library can continue supporting our community and partner organizations in new, creative ways. I can’t wait to see what Ramona and the NCM team are able to accomplish with the mobile studio.”

The NCM mobile studio is a high definition set-up that allows for high definition multi-camera recording, live editing, streaming/broadcasting, and more. Partnerships with local chambers of commerce, cities, and the County will bring the NCM team out to many community events, starting this spring.

Campaign Signs Face Restrictions Along State Highways

With the 2022 primary election season gearing up, political candidates and campaign workers for either an office or ballot measure are reminded of a state law governing the placement of “Temporary Political Signs” within view of a state highway.

Section 5405.3 of the State Outdoor Advertising Act permits the placement of Temporary Political Signs along state highways with restrictions. However, these signs are not to be placed within the state right of way. In addition, signs cannot be visible within 660 feet from the edge of the right of way of a classified “landscaped freeway.”
