Nevada County Board of Supervisors Accepts $950,000 CAL FIRE Grant to Support Wildfire PreventionThe Nevada County Board of Supervisors formally accepted funds awarded by CAL FIRE at Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting. CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit (NEU) announced last month that it had secured funding for a grant to mitigate the impacts of the damaging heavy storm event that began on December 27th, 2021. The $950,000 from the California Climate Investments CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant Program will help with costs to the county attributed to the extensive storm clean up.
The primary goal of the grant is to provide financial support focusing on wildfire mitigation efforts along primary ingress and egress routes on County maintained roads. This also is contributing to green waste mitigation efforts on privately maintained properties and ingress/egress routes along private roads.
“Our focus is to evacuate residents safely. We are doing all we can to take proactive measures to make that more effective,” said North Division Chief, CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit Jim Mathias, who was on hand to answer questions during the presentation.

Chair Hoek Introduces Board Objectives Quarterly ReportAlthough the winter storms were a challenging way to start the new year, we tackled it in true Nevada County fashion. First off, I want to thank everyone who looked out for their family, friends, and neighbors. We sent a CodeRED Alert out asking residents to check in with each other and to report emergencies to 911 and urgent unmet needs to 211. As a result, we saw no deaths resulting from the storms and outages.
At the County, we’ve continued our work to recover from the storms and prepare for the upcoming fire season. Immediately, our Building Department offered fee waivers and priority permitting for residents whose homes were hit by the storms, causing repairs. We also just received a $950,000 CAL FIRE grant to expand brush removal along key evacuation routes, in addition to the 9,000 cubic yards of green waste already removed from county-maintained roadways this year. And speaking of neighbors helping neighbors, we also just saw another record green waste year, equivalent to the weight of about 450 school buses removed from private properties alone. This is critical before fire season, as we know there is so much work to do.
2022 also marked my appointment as Board Chair – a role I am proud to serve for our community. As Board Chair, I serve on the Budget Subcommittee, ensuring good fiscal stewardship and sound financial management strategies for the upcoming 22/23 fiscal year. The budget supports our priorities to reduce wildfire risk, expand broadband, address homelessness, support affordable housing, promote economic development and sustainable recreation.
The Budget Subcommittee and Board meeting process enables us to plan for community initiatives responsibly and transparently. For example, the County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funded Nevada County’s Outdoor Visitor Safety Fund Grant Program will provide up to $850,000 in onetime grants for highly impacted outdoor recreation destinations from the South Yuba River to Donner Summit. We’ve just placed three new emergency call boxes along the South Yuba River at the 49 Crossing, Edwards Crossing, and the Town of Washington. These call boxes use a satellite connection to provide emergency phone service where traditional landline and cellular services are unavailable.
From cell service for emergency communications to broadband access for our day-to-day, connectivity has proven to be a big topic for our community. Over 4,000 residents participated in our “Need for Speed” survey on broadband connectivity. The survey results will help the County prioritize new broadband projects, apply for funding, and advocate to elected officials and state regulators.
All of this – from fires and emergency events to increased recreation tourism to broadband – impacts our local business community and economy. We started 2022 out with a renewed focus on our smallest businesses. We’ve already distributed $57,000 to 23 local microbusinesses through Nevada County’s Microbusiness Grant Program made available through state grant funding, with another $50,000 available in round 2.
We’ve faced new and unique challenges together already this year. I’m proud of how we’ve continued to work for the residents of Nevada County, and I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish together in 2022.
-Susan Hoek, Chair, Nevada County Board of Supervisors
