Mosquito Fish Giveaway

Fight the Bite: Prevent Mosquitos and Reduce the Risk of West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes disease in humans, horses, and birds. WNV spreads to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. There have been zero human cases of West Nile Virus reported by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in 2022. However, Nevada County had its first West Nile Virus (WNV) positive dead bird report, along with nine other California counties. The best way to prevent WNV is to protect yourself from mosquito bites and prevent mosquitos from breeding in standing water.

Nevada County's Environmental Health department is hosting its final Mosquito Fish Give Away on Thursday, June 30th, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm in the parking lot of the Eric Rood Center at 950 Maidu Avenue in Nevada City.

Mosquito Fish can protect your ponds and troughs by consuming large quantities of insect larvae in your pond or other standing bodies of water. By reducing the mosquito population, you can reduce your risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases including the West Nile Virus.

Brunswick Commons Donation Drive: Help Families and Individuals Celebrate their Independence

Dozens of men, women, and children are preparing to transition from homelessness into permanent housing this summer with the grand opening of Brunswick Commons, which will offer 40 units of subsidized housing to low-income locals, 28 of which will be managed by Hospitality House.

“This project has been years in the making,” shared Nancy Baglietto, executive director of Hospitality House. “What started as a rudimentary drawing on my white board has blossomed into a major public-private partnership, bringing Brunswick Commons to life. Thanks to a major donor and the leadership of the County of Nevada and Regional Housing Authority and the support of the City of Grass Valley, 50 people, including eight children, are slated to move into permanent homes of their own.”

With Independence Day nearly upon us, the community has a special opportunity to help individuals and families celebrate the return of their independence during the 4th of July week. On Thursday, July 7, Hospitality House will host a special donation drive to provide much-needed home furnishings to new tenants.
