Habitat for Humanity Breaks Ground with Support of Community Resiliency GrantIt was a beautiful day for a groundbreaking on Thursday as Board of Supervisors Chair Sue Hoek spoke to a group of community leaders and dedicated volunteers gathered to celebrate Phase 2 of Nevada County Habitat for Humanity’s Heritage Oaks Development in Grass Valley.
“I am honored to be here today, celebrating this project that exemplifies our Board’s objective to coordinate with local jurisdictions, developers, and other partners to facilitate the development of and access to affordable and workforce housing,” said Chair Hoek.
The project was made possible in part by the support of the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, who voted in January to award Habitat for Humanity a $100,000 Community Resiliency grant. The grant was funded with Federal American Rescue Plan (ARPA) dollars, in alignment with guidelines to support services that address the negative economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Habitat for Humanity will use the grant funding to support site development and infrastructure for 12 new homes in the Heritage Oaks development on Joyce Drive.

Dial 988 for Suicide Prevention SupportAs of Saturday, July 16th, everyone in the United States can access suicide prevention support by simply dialing three easy to remember numbers. Call 988 from anywhere in the US and you will be connected to the National Suicide Prevention Call Center network and someone who can support you during a hard moment. Trained hotline volunteers and staff are highly skilled at providing support to people in crisis, including assessing for safety and connecting people to resources.
For Nevada County residents who are feeling suicidal or in crisis, or for their loved ones and friends who are worried, only needing to remember three simple numbers instead of a longer 1-800 number should make accessing care much easier. This shift to a national simple phone number is the first step in a broader vision to improve crisis care for people with behavioral health needs across the country. Given the rise in overdose deaths and rates of depression and anxiety for young people and adults, improved crisis services are essential.

Nevada County Wins 1st Place in Center for Digital Government's Digital Counties SurveyThis year, the winning counties in the Digital Counties Survey from the Center for Digital Government are those that have used the challenges that have emerged since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as opportunities to learn, to invest and to collaborate. The shift to remote work fueled a need to examine and improve upon the strength of county workforces and cybersecurity. Federal funding opportunities that emerged in response to the pandemic have boosted investment in broadband. And the need to innovate quickly has driven the creation of new partnerships — both interdepartmental and those that involve public-private collaboration. What sets apart the winning counties this year is their ability to leverage the challenging times to reimagine traditional strategies and propel their technology approaches forward. Read More
