Nevada County Emergency Services Drives Three New Wildfire Community Defense Zones Forward

Nevada County Emergency Services Drives Three New Wildfire Community Defense Zones Forward

At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting, Nevada County’s Office of Emergency Services (OES) brought forward several wildfire planning and mitigation projects for approval, including three new large-scale community defense zones.

Because 92% of Nevada County residents live in high to very high fire hazard severity zones, OES continues its proactive effort to protect against loss of life and property year-round.

“Creating more protection with shaded fuel breaks, improving evacuation routes, and supporting landowners to create defensible space helps move us closer to our goal,” said OES Director Craig Griesbach. “Today’s Board action moves us forward with 1,000 acres of new protection for western Nevada County residents. The Board also approved our grant application to update the County’s Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which is a critical next step to support this work for years to come.”

OES Virtual Office Hours

OES - Virtual Office Hours

The Nevada County Office of Emergency Services launched their new “Virtual Office Hours” initiative in September as part of their ongoing effort to build collaborative capacity to address wildfire resiliency across the County.

Virtual Office Hours is a bi-weekly event where leaders and members of Firewise Communities can learn about and discuss various aspects of wildfire mitigation. Each Office Hour focuses on a specific topic or theme and provides a platform for learning from local experts, connecting with other Firewise Community leaders, and developing new skills. Recent meetings discussed the concept of Project Design (how to turn an idea into a project) and Community Engagement (the importance of working with our friends, neighbors, and local stakeholders when designing and implementing wildfire mitigation projects).

Are you a leader of a Firewise Community and interested in learning more about wildfire topics? If so, please email Alessandra.zambrano@nevadacountyca.gov with your contact information and community name to be added to our direct mailing list.

CDA Removes Trash Along LaBarr Meadows Through Adopt-a-Road Program

CDA Removes Trash Along LaBarr Meadows Through Adopt-a-Road Program

This Saturday, September 24th, eighteen staff volunteers cleaned up approximately 150 pounds of trash alongside LaBarr Meadows Road in Grass Valley. The County’s Community Development Agency (CDA) “adopted” LaBarr Meadows Road in 2022 as a part of the County’s Adopt-a-Road program. CDA’s Operation Center, which houses public works services such as roads, transit and fleet services, is located off LaBarr Meadows Road and is a natural fit for CDA staff to volunteer to keep Nevada County roads free of litter.

The Nevada County Adopt-A-Road Volunteer Program is an opportunity for individuals and groups to actively participate in keeping Nevada County roads free of litter. The County supports these volunteers by placing recognition signs along the stretch of roads being cleaned, providing equipment, training, and trash pickup.  Groups simply commit to four scheduled pickups per year.

Want to get involved? Residents can Adopt-a-Road through Nevada County Public Works. To learn more, visit www.NevadaCountyCA.gov/AdoptARoad. To inquire about adopting a roadway and which roadways are available, email public.works@nevadacountyca.gov or call (530) 265-1411.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Spotlight

Suicide Awareness Prevention Month Spotlight: Community Care Team

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Nevada County recognizes the critical role the Nevada County Mobile Crisis Team plays in supporting community members and their support networks during mental health crises and in preventing suicides in Nevada County.

The Mobile Crisis Team is a partnership between the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada County Behavioral Health, and Sierra Mental Wellness Group. The initiative pairs deputies in the Sheriff’s Office with crisis clinicians to respond to calls that may be more related to mental health needs than criminal justice.

Since its launch in December 2020, the Mobile Crisis Team has responded to 664 calls from Nevada County residents and their families. Nevada County residents and families are encouraged to reach out to the Mobile Crisis Team if they or a family member are experiencing a mental health crisis.

Environmental Impact Report - Broadband

Public Comment Period for Draft EIR on Broadband Begins Sep 30th

On September 30th, a 45-day public review period for the Draft Environmental Impact Report (Draft EIR) for the Nevada County Broadband Program begins. Nevada County is conducting a countywide Environmental Impact Report (EIR) on broadband to meaningfully address challenges and remove barriers for project developers. The ultimate goal is to increase the feasibility of universal and accessible broadband throughout Nevada County by achieving compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The proposed Nevada County Broadband Program and EIR would expand access to broadband technology throughout Nevada County and the incorporated communities of Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the Town of Truckee, but excludes federal lands and state highway rights-of-way. The countywide Nevada County Broadband EIR aims to achieve compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act for the program in advance so that individual fiber projects can take advantage of state and federal grant funding programs. Construction of individual fiber projects under the program could begin as early as spring 2023.

Forest and Fire Exhibition

FOREST?FIRE Exhibition Comes to a Close

This week marked the closing reception for the incredible Forest and Fire exhibit at the Truckee Community Recreation Center. The interdisciplinary, multi-sensory installation connecting art, the humanities, and science bring together the work of 18 writers and artists to tell the story of forest ecology and its relationship with fire.

The exhibit articulates how our forest conditions have gotten to where they are and offers a message of hope for how diverse community members can work together to create a wildfire-resilient future for our region.

Created by Llewellyn Studio in partnership with Nevada County Arts Council, Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District, and University of California, Berkeley - Sagehen Creek Field Station, with education and outreach by Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships.

The Office of Emergency Services was proud to hand out copies of the children’s story "Who needs a Forest Fire?" at various outreach events this summer. Like the exhibit, the story aims to educate local youth about what it means to live in a fire-adapted landscape and to inspire folks of all ages to be engaged stewards of the forests we live in and love.
