Nevada County Awarded Funding to Provide Rent, Mortgage, and Utility Assistance to Eligible Resident

Nevada County Housing and Community Services has funding available to help with rent, mortgage, and utility assistance for households financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The application is currently open and will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

“Financial assistance for housing is a key prevention strategy to keep people from slipping into homelessness,” says Ryan Gruver, Health and Human Services Agency Director. “This funding can directly support households on the brink of eviction or need extra support to stay in their houses.”

Priority will be given to those at risk of homelessness who are behind on rent or mortgage payments or have an eviction notice for non-payment. Broadband Expansion

Nevada County Awarded $497,799 Grant for High-Speed Internet Expansion

Nevada County was awarded $497,799 in Local Agency Technical Assistance (LATA) grant funding from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The grant will provide broadband network design and engineering throughout rural Nevada County, accelerating the construction of fiber-to-the-home and business networks to unserved communities over the next few years.

“This grant will help put us first in line with competitive shovel-ready projects as state and federal broadband construction grants are released,” said Nevada County’s Chief Information Officer Steve Monaghan.

The LATA grant is part of California’s larger broadband legislation, SB 156, to invest $6 billion in expanding fiber infrastructure and equitable access to high-speed internet for families and businesses.

Operation Greenlight

David West: Lighting the Way for Nevada County’s Veterans

In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans Day, calling on the nation to “solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”

In the nearly seven decades since, millions more Americans, including residents of Nevada County, have bravely taken up the call to protect and serve. During the week of November 5th through 13th, Nevada County will participate in its 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Week, an opportunity for local businesses to share gratitude to service members and veterans in our community.

Military Appreciation Week also gives us a chance to shine a light on the needs of veterans in our community.

Now more than ever, our veterans and their families need our support. National statistics reveal that an estimated 7,400 veterans take their own lives each year. That’s an average of 22 veterans who die by suicide every day.

This year, Nevada County is joining the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO) in Operation Green Light for Veterans, an initiative designed to shine a light on the service of our veterans.

CalTrans Traffic Alert

Caltrans Traffic Alert: Intermittent Interstate 80 Lane Closures Continue in Truckee

Caltrans is alerting Interstate 80 (I-80) motorists in Truckee to expect continued intermittent lane and shoulder closures this month for ongoing roadway improvements.

Interstate 80 motorists traveling between the I-80/State Route 89 (SR-89)/SR-267 separation and Donner Pass Road/Coldstream Road (Exit 184) should expect lane and shoulder closures and travel delays through the end of November. Construction crews are finishing drainage and paving work for the addition of eastbound ramp acceleration lanes and a westbound auxiliary lane. Temporary striping will also be placed before the project is suspended for the winter months.

Typical delays of 15 to 20 minutes should be anticipated when traveling through the work zones on weekdays. However, delays of 25 to 30 minutes are common on Thursday afternoons due to increased travel levels. Caltrans makes every effort to reduce weekend travel congestion by keeping interstate lanes open.
