Cold Weather Shelter Open Friday Night

Nevada County and Sierra Roots Open Cold Weather Emergency Shelter Friday Night

The National Weather Service predicts significantly cold weather continuing through Saturday morning. Considering the weather prediction, Sierra Roots and the County of Nevada activated the Cold Weather Shelter Protocol for Thursday and Friday nights.

The shelter will open today at 4:30 p.m. at the Nevada City Veterans Hall and will accept guests until 8:00 p.m. The shelter will close at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. This is a community-wide collaborative effort to temporarily shelter one of our most vulnerable populations during extreme weather events and connects homeless residents to additional services.

Selections from CHIRP's Visibility Through Art Collection on View at the Eric Rood Center Through December 31st

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month and in recognition of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, the County of Nevada is hosting an exhibition of artwork titled “Selections from CHIRP’s Visibility Through Art Collection, 2017 to 2021” at the Eric Rood Center from November 21st through December 31st.

The exhibition was organized in partnership with the Nevada County Arts Council and California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project (CHIRP). Featured throughout the Eric Rood Center lobby are 14 artworks selected from CHIRP's extensive Visibility Through Art Collection.

“The showing of this art in a government building in conjunction with the County's resolution of support of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe is a strong demonstration of the community's commitment to acknowledge the past,” said Shelly Covert, CHIRP Executive Director and spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe.

South County Fuel Break Town Hall, Dec 8, 6 to 8 pm, Alta Sierra Country Club

The South County Shaded Fuel Break Begins Community Outreach

Eligible property owners are receiving information outlining how to participate in the South County Shaded Fuel Break, a priority fuel reduction project in Nevada County that will slow the spread of wildland fires and improve ingress/egress routes in an emergency. CAL FIRE recently identified this project as a top priority to protect one of California’s most wildfire-vulnerable communities.

This opportunity is available to property owners within the South County Project area at no cost. The defense zone is designed to slow the spread of fire and provide a safe and effective location for evacuation and fire suppression activities, including staging ground resources for direct fire attack.

A town hall meeting will be held on December 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Alta Sierra Country Club with agency partners CAL FIRE, a registered professional forester, County of Nevada Office of Emergency Services, and Fire Safe Council on hand to address questions or concerns from property owners.

December 6th Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview


The Tuesday, December 6th meeting starts at 9:00 am at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in the Board Chambers. Face coverings are highly recommended for all individuals while indoors. Members of the public can provide general public comments or comment on items on the agenda by attending the meeting in person, emailing BOS.PublicComment@nevadacountyca.gov, calling 530-270-3474, or by using the Board’s eComment system. Please submit written comments before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5th, to provide time for the Board members to read them and for your comments to become part of the public record. At the beginning of the meeting, before public comment, Supervisors will proclaim December 10th as “Nevada County Food and Toy Run” Day, and recognize Liam Marchi with a Youth Leadership Award.  

At 10:30 a.m., following public comment and the consent calendar, Supervisors will consider three resolutions regarding temporary construction easements regarding portions of parcels for the Hirschdale Road Bridge Projects.

At 11:00 a.m., Supervisors will consider amending the Ordinance for the Land Use and Development Code to adopt the 2022 California Building Standards.

At 1:30 p.m., Supervisors will consider a resolution to purchase an armored vehicle for the Sheriff’s Office.

Lastly, Supervisors will hear a presentation from the Office of Emergency Services regarding potential updates to the Hazardous Vegetation Ordinance.

Truckee Approves a Single-Use Foodware Reduction Ordinance

On November 8th, the Truckee Town Council adopted a Single-Use Foodware Reduction Ordinance including the following policies:

  • A ban on the sale and distribution of expanded polystyrene, commonly known as Stryrofoam. (Effective April 1, 2023)
  • Food vendors must provide reusable foodware for in-house dining. (Effective January 1, 2024)
  • Food vendors must charge a $0.25 fee for each disposable takeout food container and cup provided. Vendors keep the fee revenue, and customers on WIC, EBT, or Medi-Cal are exempt from the fee. (Effective January 1, 2024)
  • Accessory foodware items must only be provided if requested by the customer. This includes utensils, chopsticks, condiment cups and packets, straws, stirrers, splash sticks, cocktail sticks, napkins, cup lids, and cup sleeves. Note that some of these were already part of Assembly Bill 1276 and additions were incorporated for the local level. (Effective January 1, 2024)
The ordinance was steered by the Single-Use Foodware Reduction Working Group, which was made up of business owners, members of the public, students, environmental advocates, and two Truckee Town Council Members.

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

County Counsel is seeking a Legal Secretary I or II.
 
County Counsel provides legal representation to county departments and special districts with coordination and collaboration with the Board of Supervisors and County Executive Officer. You will work closely with the County Counsel, attorneys, and staff to provide legal administrative support and assist in handling sophisticated and critical legal matters. 
 
Knowledge of legal administrative practices is key to this position as you perform various legal secretarial and administrative duties for County legal staff.
 
Responsibilities may include:

  • Preparing correspondences and legal documents, including briefs, motions, petitions, resolutions, ordinances, legal opinions, contracts, leases, agreements, and investigative tapes
  • Drafting and formatting legal documents using accurate terminology and procedures for filing in the Courts
  • Maintaining appointment calendars and being responsible for scheduling a variety of meetings
  • Making and preparing travel arrangements for staff

While not required, an ideal candidate would have skills in online research and legal case management software. The successful candidate will be required to report to the office daily.
