Creating Defensible Space: Nevada County Services Team Up to Help Community Prep for Wildfire

Wren Simmonds is delighted with the land-clearing work completed at her Rough & Ready home.

“I’m not disabled, but some of the work was beyond my capacity,” said Simmonds, who is elderly, has vision problems, and lives on a fixed income. “There were trees that needed to be limbed that were covered with vines.”

Nevada County has millions of federal grant dollars available to hire work crews to create defensible space at hundreds of homes, all at no cost to homeowners or renters. The county just needs people to apply.

OES, Environmental Health, and NID Respond to Town of Washington Water Emergency During Winter Storm

Atmospheric river events with above-average rainfall and high winds in early January caused localized flooding, downed trees, and power outages throughout Nevada County. Due to these storms, the Town of Washington’s drinking water supply system was severely impacted by flooding, prompting a boil water notice to 120 Town of Washington residents on January 1st.

Nevada County’s Office of Emergency Services (OES), Nevada County Environmental Health, and Nevada Irrigation District (NID) partnered to support Washington Water District and the impacted residents.

Final EIR is available for public review of the Idaho Maryland Mine project

Planning Commission Public Hearing on Proposed Idaho Maryland Mine to Take Place Mid-March or Later

The Nevada County Planning Department released the Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Idaho-Maryland Mine Project on December 16, 2022 (review the Notice of Availability).

The Final EIR includes formal responses to public comments submitted regarding the Draft EIR. With the release of the Final EIR, the public has time to review the document before it comes to the Planning Commission, which is expected no sooner than Mid-March.

Property Tax Postponement Deadline Draws Near

The State Controller's Property Tax Postponement Program allows homeowners who are seniors, are blind, or have a disability to defer current-year property taxes on their principal residence if they meet certain criteria, including at least 40 percent equity in the home and an annual household income of $49,017 or less (among other requirements).  The deferment of property taxes is secured by a lien against the property which must eventually be repaid.  The deadline to apply for the California Property Tax Postponement (PTP) program for the 2022-2023 tax year is February 10, 2023.

Nevada County Recognized for Excellence in Financial Reporting

Nevada County has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for fiscal year 2021/2022.

“Financial transparency is a priority for Nevada County,” said Auditor-Controller Gina Will. “We are honored to receive this recognition again and will continue to stay current with financial best practices and go beyond the minimum transparency standards.”

The GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

February 7th Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview

Pursuant to Governor Gavin Newsom's Executive Order on the convening of public meetings in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the County of Nevada will hold its regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Supervisors from inside the Board Chambers. Face coverings are highly recommended for all individuals while indoors.

The Tuesday, February 7th meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in the Board Chambers. Face coverings are highly recommended for all individuals while indoors.

Members of the public can provide general public comments or comment on items on the agenda by attending the meeting in person, emailing BOS.PublicComment@nevadacountyca.gov, calling 530-270-3474, or by using the Board’s eComment system. Please submit written comments before 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6th, to provide time for the Board members to read them and for your comments to become part of the public record. Following public comment, the Board will consider a resolution proclaiming February 2023 as “Grand Jury Awareness Month” in Nevada County. They will then hear a presentation from Connecting Point Executive Director Tim Giuliani recognizing February 11th as “211 Day.”

At 10:30, following the consent calendar, the Board will hold a public hearing to approve funding for the purchase of property to be used for Behavioral Health respite services.

Before adjourning, the Board will consider a resolution awarding a contract between the County of Nevada and Bobo Construction, Inc. for the construction of the McCourtney Road Transfer Station (MRTS) Improvement Project, a resolution approving an interfund loan from the General Fund to assist with potential cash flow shortages resulting from the MRTS Improvement Project, and a resolution approving a contract amendment with KNN Public Finance, LLC to serve as the County’s municipal advisor in connection with the issuance of debt obligations for the MRTS project.
