Planning Commission Public Hearing Scheduled for May 10th for Idaho Maryland Mine Project

Save the Date: Idaho Maryland Mine Project Planning Commission Public Hearing Scheduled for May 10th

The Nevada County Planning Department has scheduled the Planning Commission Public Hearing for the proposed Idaho Maryland Mine – Rise Grass Valley Project on May 10th. The Public Hearing will continue on May 11th as needed.

The Planning Department will issue a formal Notice of Public Hearing for the Planning Commission Public Hearing in mid-April. Interested residents are encouraged to subscribe for updates on the project’s planning process at www.NevadaCountyCA.gov/IMMRise.

Community Celebrates Cashin's Field with Ribbon Cutting

The community came together on Tuesday for a beautiful ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new affordable housing development at Cashin's Field in Nevada City. The project is the culmination of a collaboration between multiple local and state agencies to bring an affordable housing project to the City of Nevada City.

The now fully occupied project provides 51 units of housing, including 11 one-bedroom, 26 two-bedroom, and 14 three-bedrooms apartments. All units are designated for 30-60% area median income.

Speakers for the event  included California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, staff representing U.S. Congressman Kevin Kiley, and officials from Nevada County, City of Nevada City, Regional Housing Authority, Affordable Housing Development Corporation.

Nevada County and Sierra Roots Open Cold Weather Shelter Friday Night Through Sunday Morning

The National Weather Service predicts cold weather Friday night, March 24th through Sunday morning, March 26th. Considering the weather prediction, Sierra Roots and the County of Nevada are activating the Cold Weather Shelter Protocol for Friday and Saturday nights.

The shelter will open at 4:30 pm each night in Nevada City at the Veterans Hall (lower level), 415 North Pine Street in Nevada City and will accept guests until 8:00 pm. The shelter will close at 7:30 am each morning. This is a community-wide collaborative effort to temporarily shelter one of our most vulnerable populations during extreme weather events and connects homeless residents to additional services.

California State Parks Hosts Volunteer Program Open House March 25th

Lithium-ion battery recycling

Rotary Clubs of Western Nevada County to Hold Lithium-ion Battery Recycling Event on April 15th

The Rotary Clubs of Western Nevada County are offering a unique recycling event at the Eric Rood Center on Saturday April 15th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The public can drop off Lithium-ion rechargeable devices and batteries for recycling by Redwood Materials, a company that recycles the minerals and uses them to make new rechargeable batteries. Eligible items include cellphones, tablets, laptops, electric toothbrushes, e-shavers, vapes, wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, power tool batteries, video game controllers, and more.

March 28th Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview


The Tuesday, March 28th meeting starts at 9:00 am at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in the Board Chambers.

Members of the public can provide general public comments or comment on items on the agenda by attending the meeting in person, emailing BOS.PublicComment@nevadacountyca.gov, calling 530-270-3474, or by using the Board’s eComment system. Please submit written comments before 4:00 pm on Monday, March 27th, to provide time for the Board members to read them and for your comments to become part of the public record. Following Public Comment and the Consent Calendar, the Board will adjourn briefly and convene the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Nevada County Sanitation District No. 1. Following the Consent Calendar and Public Comment, the Board will adjourn as the Board of Directors of the Nevada County Sanitation District No. 1 and reconvene as the Nevada County Board of Supervisors.

Interim Public Health Director Erin Mettler will then bring a resolution proclaiming April 3rd through 9th, 2023 as Public Health Week in Nevada County.

Then, Director of Social Services Rachel Peña will bring a resolution proclaiming April 10th through 14th, 2023 as Eligibility and Employment Week in Nevada County.

Sheriff Shannan Moon will discuss a resolution approving a contract between the County of Nevada and Flock Group Inc. for software that will provide capabilities for searching video files for the purpose of law enforcement investigations.

Director of Human Resources Steve Rose will then bring a resolution authorizing the process to select a Treasurer-Tax Collector to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Tina Vernon.

The Board will then go into Closed Session to discuss several matters.

At 1:30 pm, following a recess for lunch, Planning Director Brian Foss will lead a public hearing to review and accept the 2022 General Plan Annual Progress Report to the Board of Supervisors and 2022 Housing Element Annual Progress Report.

Director of the Office of Emergency Services, Craig Griesbach, will conclude with an ordinance amending Article 7 of Chapter IV of the Nevada County General Code regarding Hazardous Vegetation Abatement.

Grass Valley Police Chief Alex Gammelgard Elected President of the California Police Chiefs Association

On March 14th, Grass Valley Police Chief Alex Gammelgard was sworn in for a one-year term as the 58th President of the California Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) in Monterey, CA.  Several members of GVPD, the GVPD Honor Guard, and the Grass Valley City Council were in attendance to support the chief. The CPCA serves 334 municipal police chiefs and is instrumental in improving modern policing and policies. Congratulations, Chief Gammelgard!

This is an experienced level position in which individuals perform a variety of technical accounting duties in support of the County Treasury pool operations. In this role you would be responsible for vital activities, including:

  • Receive, review, verify and process daily Treasury accounting records. These can include bank deposits, bank statements, investment transactions, and associated documents.
  • Apply and implement County policies and State and Federal laws and regulations.
  • Perform technical financial record keeping for County Treasury operations. Prepare bank reconciliations, record and reconcile investment transactions, reconcile interest earnings, and prepare other accounting documents.
  • Work with multiple software platforms, including banking software and investment tracking software. Compile and analyze data using Microsoft Excel.
