Nevada County Planning Commission Recommends the Denial of Proposed Idaho-Maryland Mine Project

Public Health Department Offers Know the Signs Community Training

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Did you know that over the last year, Nevada County’s local crisis line (530-265-5811) received more than 3,000 calls for mental health-related support? During the month of May, let’s normalize talking about mental health, asking for help and learning how we can support people in our lives and community who are struggling.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Nevada County Public Health is hosting a free community Know the Signs training on Wednesday, May 24th from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Attendees will learn about the warning signs of suicide, how to engage with someone they’re concerned about, and the resources available to help.

Free Screening of Two Documentaries Highlighting the Experience of Chinese Migrant Workers

The Nevada County Library and the Nevada County Historical Society are hosting a double feature documentary screening at the Nevada Theatre on Wednesday, May 17th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Made possible by the Friends of the Nevada County Libraries, this event is free and open to the public. The event will feature two highly acclaimed documentaries: "Legacy" produced by Joe Flannery with the U.S. Forest Service, and "Going Home" by documentary filmmaker Min Zhou. Both filmmakers will be in attendance for a special Q&A after the double feature.

Nevada County Agriculture Commissioner Chris de Nijs Appointed to Federal National Wildlife Services

Nevada County’s Agriculture Commissioner Chris de Nijs was recently appointed to the National Wildlife Services Advisory Committee, which advises the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Thomas Vilsack on recommendations for policies and activities for the USDA’s Wildlife Services (WS) program. 

“This means rural foothill agricultural producers truly have a voice at the federal level. I look forward to working with the many diverse stakeholders that depend on the Wildlife Services program and providing meaningful input to help them better accomplish their respective work,” explained Chris de Nijs. “As the only person selected from the State of California, this is a huge honor and very humbling.”

Adult and Family Services Commission to Hold Public Hearing on Service Needs and Priorities June 13th

The Nevada County Adult and Family Services Commission, in coordination with the Health and Human Services Agency, will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 13th at 10:00 am in the Nevada County Board of Supervisors' Chambers to discuss the service needs and priorities of Nevada County and to solicit resident input.

The Commission is in the process of submitting an updated Community Action Plan (CAP Plan) for the 2024/2025 program years. The CAP Plan guides service development and delivery for the next two years, based on community and agency input regarding service needs and gaps. The draft 2024/25 Community Action Plan was prepared using input collected from surveys completed by members of the low-income community and service providers.

Yuba Watershed Institute Named Bureau of Land Management’s Conservation Partner of the Year

This week, in a ceremony at the North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) named the Yuba Watershed Institute (YWI) their Conservation Partner of the Year for 2023. YWI is a local nonprofit that has been operating on the San Juan Ridge for more than 30 years under a series of cooperative agreements with BLM, to manage the 960-acre ‘Inimim Forest. In recent years, the two organizations have expanded the collaboration to other parts of the Yuba River watershed.

Nevada County’s Public Health Department is seeking a Health Education Coordinator to develop, coordinate, and implement local health education and prevention programs. The position is part of the Health & Wellness division, a dynamic team that also includes Nevada County’s tobacco prevention, alcohol and other drug prevention, suicide prevention, local oral health, HIV case management, and WIC programs. 

The Health Education Coordinator provides coordination and leadership to the CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) program, which works to support healthy, active, and nourished lifestyles for Nevada County residents. This temporary position will focus on current initiatives, including supporting organizations working on nutrition security; planning and implementing food waste prevention programs; and physical activity and nutritional education programs.
