Stay Out, Stay Alive: South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort Stresses Unsafe Conditions at the RiverEvery year, first responders receive several calls for service for visitors who have an accident at the South Yuba River due to slips and falls. Swift water rescues are performed many times through the summer months due to unsafe river conditions. “Our Yuba River is majestic, but she’s also unforgiving, and it only takes an instant to lose a life,” said District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek, who chairs the South Yuba River Public Safety Cohort meetings with District 1 Supervisor Heidi Hall. This year, high water flows have already taken one life and are modeling similarly to high river flows in 2019, when multiple lives were lost in June alone due to visitors and locals recreating in dangerous river conditions. Nevada County Secures $1.7 Million to Treat Evacuation RoutesAt their May 23rd meeting, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors approved accepting CAL FIRE and Federal Emergency Management Agency grant funding to reduce hazardous fuels along evacuation routes in Nevada County's wildland urban interface. The Office of Emergency Services (OES) was successful in securing funding made available by both state and federal legislatures for fire prevention and hazard mitigation. In total, OES obtained $1.7 million to increase safe resident egress and first responder ingress by thinning overgrown vegetation and clearing downed storm debris. Read More

Public Invited to Unveiling of Plaque Commemorating Washington's Chinese CommunityIn the 1850s, over 20% of Nevada County‘s population was Chinese. The town of Washington had one of the County's largest Chinese communities, and one of the most prominent Chinese families was that of Suey Chung (later better known as Fong Chow) and his wife, Lonnie Tom. Mr. Fong operated the nearby Omega Mine for some years. The public is invited to learn more about Mr. Fong and Ms. Tom on Saturday, May 27th, at 11:00 am, when a plaque commemorating Washington’s Chinese Community will be unveiled. The plaque was sponsored by the family's descendants, led by Professor Gordon Chang of Stanford University, who will speak at the event. The Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission will hold a ceremony at the head of China Alley, which led to the Chinese community.
