Share Your Ideas for Improving Recreation in Nevada County

Nevada County invites residents and visitors countywide to share project ideas to improve recreation. Take the survey online or at community events and locations now through July 7th. All ideas are welcome!

Nevada County and its partners are asking for input on recreation projects, programs, policies, or solutions that may enhance recreation access, support health and safety, preserve natural resources, and increase economic vitality.

This survey is the second opportunity for the public to participate in the development of the Nevada County Recreation and Resiliency Master Plan, led by the Nevada County Community Development Agency and consultants Design Workshop.

Nevada County Launches Trail Finder App for "Celebration of Trails" Month

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors proclaimed June 2023 as “Celebration of Trails Month” in Nevada County, which recognizes the incredible benefits trails provide local residents and visitors. To celebrate, the County launched the new Nevada County Trail Finder App to help users discover public access trails throughout Nevada County.

The Nevada County Trail Finder App serves as a recreational resource to connect people with the outdoors and the vast network of trails in Nevada County. The mobile-responsive app utilizes GIS data to identify managing agencies, trail surface types, and permitted uses, like hiking, biking, equestrian and off-highway vehicles.

Library's Summer Learning Program for Kids & Teens Starts June 12th

Our voices have power. We use our voices to share stories, express ourselves, and spark change. Our voices include not only the sounds we make, but the words we write, the art we create, the movements we perform, and the actions we take each day to impact our world. With this year’s Summer Learning theme, Find Your Voice!, the library encourages participants to embrace reading and find inspiration for self-expression. 

This year’s Find Your Voice! Summer Learning program will include events and workshops at all Nevada County Library locations. From Wild Things’ amazing and inspiring animal rescue program, to fun hula hoop workshops by Shyhoopz, the library has got you covered with free and family-friendly activities!

Nevada County Connects Offers Summer Youth Bus Passes

Nevada County Connects is offering a Summer Youth Bus Pass for kids ages 6 to 17 with proof of age. The pass provides unlimited rides on all Nevada County Connects fixed routes, including Route 5 to Auburn, Route 6 to Penn Valley – Lake Wildwood, and Route 7 serving the South Yuba River and North San Juan.

The Summer Youth Pass sells for $25.00 and is good from June 1st through August 31st.

Internship Spotlight: Logan van den Berg

The Nevada County Executive Office recently hosted Nevada Union senior Logan van den Berg for a three-month internship as part of his senior project. Inspired to pursue a career in government by his grandfather, who was a member of the Sonora City Council for 52 consecutive years, Logan was mentored by County Executive Officer Alison Lehman.

During his 20-hour internship at the Eric Rood Administrative Center, Logan researched the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020 election, with a focus on the role of mail-in voting on voter turnout, and interviewed District 3 Supervisor Lisa Swarthout, who offered sage advice to the budding community leader: “Be yourself, be the change, be educated, be motivated, and keep trying.”

Nevada County is excited to welcome Kathy Cahill as Public Health Director starting July 10th. 

Cahill will lead Nevada County's Public Health Department, working alongside Health Officer Dr. Sherilynn Cooke and overseeing a team of 43 staff. Nevada County Public Health is a small but mighty department and is among the smallest communities in California to be nationally accredited (the mark of excellence in Public Health). Public Health serves as a connecter and convener, working with emergency services agencies to prepare for and respond to disasters, working with the local healthcare sector and community-based organizations to promote community health, and much more.

Probation Department Sponsors Annual Special Olympics Northern CA Law Enforcement Torch Run

Nevada County Probation will raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Northern California (SONC) by participating in the 2023 Law Enforcement Torch Run on June 13th.

The Nevada County leg of the run will take place at 10:00 am. The run will start and stop in the Eric Rood Administrative Center parking lot. This is the second year the Nevada County Probation Department has sponsored and organized the run for Nevada County. Participants this year will include members from the Probation Department, Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s Office, Northern CHP, Truckee Police Department, Nevada City Police Department, and Grass Valley Police Department.

Roadwork Starting on Dog Bar Road for 2023 Road Repair and Rehab Project

Nevada County Public Works is starting repairs and surfacing along Dog Bar Road, Carrie Drive, Bobcat Court, and Cougar Court in Grass Valley, and Gold Country Drive in Penn Valley as part of the 2023 Road Rehab Project, beginning June 12th and going through mid-August of 2023. 

As construction begins in these areas over the next three months, please plan for up to 20-minute delays from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday due to one-lane traffic controls. Motorists will have access throughout construction, and message boards will be placed 72 hours before construction to allow residents to plan accordingly.

Digital Equity Event Draws Broadband Champions

On May 12th, Nevada County was pleased to support the regional Broadband for All, Digital Equity, and Deployment Workshop in Grass Valley. The event included representatives from state and federal agencies, community-based organizations, elected officials, internet service providers, and many community champions. The workshop focused on identifying solutions to the unique barriers faced by rural counties in ensuring broadband access for all residents. Participant-proposed recommendations will feed into the state’s five-year Digital Equity Plan and Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment Plan that are currently being developed and which will direct millions of dollars in funding over the next 10 years throughout California.

June 13th Board of Supervisors Meeting Preview

The Tuesday, June 13th meeting starts at 9:00 am at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in the Board Chambers.

 Members of the public can provide general public comments or comment on items on the agenda by attending the meeting in person, emailing BOS.PublicComment@nevadacountyca.gov, calling 530-270-3474, or by using the Board’s eComment system. Please submit written comments before 4:00 pm on Monday, June 12th, to provide time for the Board members to read them and for your comments to become part of the public record. Following general Public Comment and adoption of the Consent Calendar, the Board will adjourn as the Nevada County Board of Supervisors and call the regular meeting of the Nevada County Sanitation District No. 1 Board of Directors to order. The Board of Directors will consider the NCSD#1 Consent Calendar, and then take public comment on items under the jurisdiction of the Sanitation District. The Board will adjourn as the Board of Directors of the Nevada County Sanitation District No. 1 and reconvene as the Nevada County Board of Supervisors.

The Board will then go into a Closed Session to review its position regarding labor negotiations.

Following closed session, the Board will consider a resolution to adopt a Memorandum of Understanding between the County of Nevada and the Probation Peace Officers’ Association.

At 10:00, Housing Director Mike Dent will introduce a public hearing to discuss the service needs and priorities of Nevada County and solicit citizen input on Nevada County’s Community Action Plan for the 2024/2025 program years. The Board will then consider a resolution accepting public comment on the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) 2024/25 Community Action Plan and approving the submittal of the CSBG 2024/25 CAP to the State Department of Community Services and Development.

At 10:15, Sheriff-Coroner/Public Administrator Shannan Moon will introduce a Public Community Forum regarding the TRUTH Act to provide information to the public about Immigration and Customs Enforcement access to individuals and to receive and consider public comment.

At 10:30, Planning Director Brian Foss will introduce a public hearing to consider approval of the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District Park Impact Fee Nexus Study Update and modifications to Development Impact Mitigation Fees for the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District and the Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District Quimby Land Dedication and In-Lieu Fee Study and Revised Quimby In-Lieu Fees charged on new residential development. The Board will then consider two resolutions related to the public hearing.

Before recessing for lunch, the Board will go into Closed Session to discuss three items.

After the lunch recess, the Board will reconvene at 1:30 to hold a public hearing to consider approval of proposed increases in Solid Waste Parcel Charges for all customers within unincorporated eastern Nevada County. Public Works Director Heba El-Guindy will then bring forward for Board consideration a resolution accepting the Rate Study for unincorporated eastern Nevada County Solid Waste parcel charges, and an ordinance establishing the schedule of parcel charges for unincorporated eastern Nevada County.

The Board meeting will then be adjourned.
