Board Adopts Annual Priorities

At Tuesday's February 12th Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board adopted their annual priorities. These priorities outline the Board's objectives for staff for the upcoming year.

Wildfire, homelessness, housing, cannabis and maintaining the County's fiscal stability and core services remain top priorities for the Board. Supporting economic development and civic engagement, and continuing research into the potential reorganization of western county park and recreation districts and the best use of "Lot 6," the current Public Works Yard near the Nevada County Airport, also remain on the Board's annual priorities.

Each year in January, the Board meets for a two-day workshop to look at their annual priorities. Priorities and objectives are revised and then adopted at a Board meeting in February.

Extreme Weather Shelters Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday Nights

The National Weather Service is predicting more heavy snow and cold temperatures in the foothills this weekend.

In an effort to collaborate over one of our most vulnerable populations, the City of Nevada City, Sierra Roots, Salvation Army and Nevada County have initiated their Extreme Weather Shelter Protocol to include Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights, February 16th through the morning of February 19th.

Public Works Tackling Snowy Conditions on County Roads Over Summit

With the National Weather Service predicting another possible 6 feet of snow over Donner Summit this weekend, our Public Works crews will continue to be busy keeping roads clear in the unincorporated areas of Truckee.

Crews have been active over Donner Pass, Hobart Mills and areas closer to the Town of Truckee keeping up with snow, ice and tree hazards. If you see any hazards on County roads, please report them through the Ask Nevada County app or website, or by calling Public Works at (530) 265-1411 during business hours.

Winter Weather Predicted to Continue through Weekend

Caltrans District 3 is alerting motorists of winter driving conditions and to anticipate travel delays this Presidents’ Day holiday weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until noon Sunday for the greater Lake Tahoe area. Several more feet of snow is expected with wind gusts up to 60 mph at higher elevations that could create whiteout conditions over Donner Summit on Interstate 80 and Echo Summit on U.S. Highway 50.

Nevada County Office of Emergency Services would like to remind residents that free sand and sandbags are available at locations in Nevada City, Penn Valley, North San Juan and Grass Valley. Residents can also report issues or fallen trees on County roads online with the Ask Nevada County web page or app, or by phone during business hours at (530) 265-1411.

Virtual Reality and 3D Printer Training at the Truckee Library

The Truckee Library will hold a virtual reality program for kids on Thursday, February 21st at 4:00 p.m. and an introductory 3D printer training for adults on Thursday, February 28th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Virtual reality is a 3-dimensional, computer-generated environment created using a headset, hand controllers, and sensors. Kids, teens and their families are invited to try out the Oculus Rift virtual reality system at the library. The virtual experiences on offer include a visit to outer space, a roller coaster ride, and more.

3D printer training will allow those who attend to be authorized to use the library's equipment to 3D print their own creations. The training will cover the basics of how 3D printing works, how to operate the printer, and how to find or make designs for 3D objects.

Benefit Assistance for Veterans Exposed to Water Contaminants

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced it will begin a process that may allow Veterans to receive disability pay if they were sickened by drinking water contaminated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Nevada County Veterans who may be affected by this decision can visit the County Veterans Service Office for more information on how to claim benefits.

The VA has provided health care or reimbursements for medical costs to Veterans and their family members with illnesses related to exposure to water contaminated by solvents and fuels in the past, however, it was never given "presumptive status" before now, meaning they are considering service related disability compensation, for any condition.

Nevada County Public Health congratulates Julie DeHollander, Nutritionist, on her recent achievement of certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). This certification is an accomplishment for Julie and an asset to the Public Health's WIC program.

It's not too early to start preparing for the 2019 fire season. Follow along with YubaNet’s weekly articles aimed at helping residents take “bite sized” steps to prepare for the next high fire season. Over 25 weeks the articles address, “vegetation management on private properties, how to harden your home, what you need to do now to be ready if/when evacuations are being called for your area, how-to guides for communication plans, evacuation plans, how Nevada County Schools prepare for wildfire and more. Each story will have resources to help you keep your family safe.”

Week 10 is about practicing your emergency plan with your kids, including packing your go bags, evacuation exercises and knowing the evacuation protocols when school is in session. The Nevada County Superintendent of Schools is hosting two after-school Safety Summits for parents: March 5th at Nevada Union High School and March 12th at Bear River High School. Both events start at 6:30 p.m.

Agreement Reached to Avert Federal Shutdown

President Donald Trump announced today that an agreement has been reached to avert another federal shutdown. The spending package finalizes funding for all of government through the rest of the 2019 fiscal year, through September 30th. The newly signed appropriations bill ensures there cannot not be another government shutdown until October of 2019. County staff expects normal operational capabilities with federal partnership agencies for the remainder of the 2019 fiscal year.

County Offices Closed February 18th in Observance of Presidents’ Day

All administrative County offices will be closed on Monday, February 18th, in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday. Public safety and Sheriff's patrol services will continue. Normal business hours for other offices will resume on Tuesday, February 19th.
