On August 22nd, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara visited Nevada County to speak to residents about issues around obtaining homeowners insurance at Nevada County's Insurance Town Hall. Approximately five hundred residents from both Nevada County and outside of the area attended, in addition to thousands of others who tuned-in online and on local cable channels.

Work Begins on Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone Shaded Fuel Break

CAL FIRE Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit in cooperation with Nevada County and the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County began work on County of Nevada property as part of the Ponderosa West Grass Valley Defense Zone Project. Crews from CAL FIRE Washington Ridge Camp, with support from the California Native Plant Society, began strategic clearing to both reduce fuels and support forest health.

Private property owners within the project area have been contacted. There is no cost to those who choose to participate. Community members are encouraged to participate in a public Open House to address questions or concerns. The open house is set for September 4th from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in the main Street Center Building.

Nevada County is under a new voting model called the Voter’s Choice Act, providing greater flexibility and convenience for voters. Nevada County voters can vote by mail or drop their ballot in a Nevada County Drop Box any time before Election Day, or stop by one of Nevada County’s Vote Centers.

Nevada County Behavioral Health is kicking off the community planning process for the next three-year Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) Plan. We want to hear from the community about the mental health needs and priorities in Nevada County. Your input is essential to helping the Behavioral Health Department decide where our resources should be focused over the next three years.

Prescription Drug Discount Program Sponsored by Nevada County

Nevada County has partnered with Coast2Coast Prescription Drug Program to allow all residents, regardless of income, age, or health status, to save on the cost of medications.

Coast2Coast provides a Rx card program that is free of charge, requires no paperwork, and is available at most participating pharmacies and many governmental offices. The program is designed to assist uninsured, the underinsured and those whose prescriptions may not be covered under their existing insurance policy. The program can also assist those with high deductibles or Healthcare Savings Accounts Medi-Care Part D participants without supplemental coverage when they reach their "donut hole" can also save money using the card. Cardholders can save up to 75% on over 60,000 medications and can use the card at participating locations, including most pharmacy chains and independent pharmacies in Nevada County.

NorCal AIDS Cycle Awards Funds to Public Health’s HIV/Hep C Testing and Counseling Clinic

The Public Health Department is proud to report that the NorCal AIDS cycle has awarded additional funds to support its HIV/Hep C Testing and Counseling Clinic, which has been funded fully by NorCal AIDS Cycle since the department started offering these free services. The clinic offers Rapid Testing for both HIV and Hepatitis C; that means clients receive confidential results in twenty minutes. The clinic also provides a venue for the Public Health's free Naloxone Distribution Program (naloxone can counter the effects of an opioid overdose).

To date Public Health has received seven generous awards from NorCal AIDS Cycle, totaling $58,700 over the course of seven years.

August 27^th Board Meeting Preview

Board of Supervisors meetings take place every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Unless otherwise noted, at the beginning of each meeting, the public can address the Board on items that don't appear on the agenda, but are of public interest and are within the jurisdiction of the Board. Tuesday's August 27th meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Chambers at the Eric Rood Administrative Center in Nevada City.

Following the consent calendar, the board will consider a resolution appointing Katharine Elliott as the new County Counsel, approving an employment agreement between the County of Nevada and Katharine Elliott, for the period of November 1, 2019 through October 31, 2023.

Then the Office of Emergency Services will give their monthly informational update to the Board on the progress made toward wildfire preparedness including progress on grants and vegetation management.

Afterwards, Housing Director Mike Dent will be giving a "Bridges to Housing" presentation on homelessness in Nevada County covering issues including affordable housing projects, grants and the Homeless Outreach and Medical Engagement (HOME) Team.

Next, the Board will hear a Annual Report by the Nevada County Economic Resource Council on the completion of the fourth year, Fiscal Year 2018/19, of their five-year contract for comprehensive economic development program management and tourism services for the County of Nevada

Explore The Art of Tie Dye with the Library

The Madelyn Helling Library is teaching a free class on the art of tie dye on Thursday, August 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Join library staff in celebrating summer by tie dying some t-shirts! Supplies are provided, but patrons are welcome to bring whatever they like to dye. The event will be held outside in the Marian E. Gallaher, M.D. Amphitheater. Class size is limited so registration is encouraged!

Job Openings at Nevada County: Building Maintenance Specialist

Nevada County employs approximately 800 employees covering a full range of services and positions, from accountants to wastewater treatment system operators. In Nevada County, quality of life comes first. It is the only rural California county with two designated Cultural Arts Districts and is known for its abundance of outdoor recreational activities.

The Facilities Management Division of the Information and General Services Department has an opening for a Building Maintenance Specialist. This position is responsible for maintenance activities within County buildings and properties. There are over 40 individual sites the Division maintains with over 500,000 square feet of building space. Facilities sites vary from County Library's and general administrative space like the Eric Rood Center to the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility. Experience with various building systems such as plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems are important for this potions. Also strong communication and computer skills as well.
