The Board of Supervisors and staff are continuing to monitor the progress of the California Public Utilites Commission's (CPUC) investigation into recent Public Safety Power Shut-off (PSPS) events and ensure utilities are held accountable for their actions during these events. Find more information about CPUC oversight on public utilities and recent actions at www.cpuc.ca.gov/psps.

While Nevada County is encouraged that a formal inquiry has begun, this is only the beginning. County residents are encouraged to submit feedback to the CPUC at public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov noting proceeding number R.18-12-005. Please include specific economic, emotional, educational and physical impacts. Note your address and phone service provider if your phone connection was also negatively affected.

Supervisor Miller and RCRC Discuss Homeowners Insurance at the Ronald Regan Library

On Thursday November 14th, Supervisor Dan Miller, member of the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) subcommittee on Homeowners Insurance, met at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library with California FAIR Plan President Anneliese Jivan and other subject matter experts to discuss the growing crisis of accessibility and affordability of homeowners insurance. The subcommittee was established by RCRC to dig into the issue of the growing loss of homeowners insurance throughout the state's wildland urban interface (WUI) areas and develop a set of recommendations for RCRC to bring to the legislature and Governor's office for consideration.

$225,000 Nevada County Last-Mile Broadband Grant Application Available

The application process for the Nevada County Last-Mile Broadband Grant, managed by Sierra Business Council (SBC), is officially open.

The focus of the Nevada County Last-Mile Broadband Grant Program is to provide resources that help make the financial case for new and existing Internet Service Providers to invest in building broadband infrastructure that supports economic development, public safety, education and overall community prosperity in Nevada County. Funds will be targeted to areas that are unlikely to receive broadband service without grant funding. The maximum grant amount is $225,000. Multiple, smaller grants will be considered.

County and NCCA Host Generator Education Workshop for Contractors

On November 13th, the Nevada County Building Department partnered with the Nevada County Contractors’ Association (NCCA) and Generac Power Systems Inc. to host a workshop on generator permitting and installation options. The workshop had approximately 50 contractors, design professionals and industry representatives present during the interactive group discussion. The group learned about minimum California Electrical Code requirements, permitting standards, new available products for generator solutions, and products that will be available in the coming year to help make our community safer when installing and operating generators.

Movement Mortgage and Child Welfare Services Provide Comfort Cases for Foster Youth

Nevada County Child Welfare Services has been awarded an amazing opportunity with Comfort Cases and Movement Mortgage, a company in the mortgage industry. Movement Mortgage of Nevada County identified Nevada County Child Welfare Services as the agency they will send their completed Comfort Cases to.

On September 3rd, Nevada County Social Worker Cara Carvalho connected with Heidi Seavers, the representative from Movement Mortgage's Grass Valley branch and Tony Bonetti, Executive Director of Comfort Cases to begin the process of accepting this generous gift. On October 29th, Movement Mortgage had a packing party and prepared 143 individualized backpacks for specifically identified youth in our community, during the County wide power outage, no less!

Apply for 2020/21 Community Service Block Grant Funding

The Nevada County Adult & Family Services Commission (AFSC) announces a Request for Proposal for the Nevada County Community Services Block Grant Funding (CSBG). The AFSC seeks proposals from local non-profit agencies to provide services that will enhance the priority set forth by the Community Services Block Grant Community Action Plan in the area of Improving Household Income.

Two CSBG awards will be funded in the total amount of $148,000, in support of the mission of the AFSC in order to improve the lives of low-income residents of Nevada County. Each award totaling $74,000, will be disbursed in the amount of $37,000 annually for calendar years 2020 and 2021, based on the availability of funds.

Nevada County Ranks First for Exclusive Breastfeeding

Nevada County ranks first in the state for exclusive breastfeeding rates in 2018!

On September 24th, the California Department of Public Health's Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division (MCAH) announced the release of the California 2018 in-hospital breastfeeding Initiation rates. The MCAH monitors the in-hospital infant feeding practices utilizing data obtained during newborn screening for genetic diseases. There are two data points considered for in-hospital feeding practices: Any Breastfeeding and Exclusive Breastfeeding. Not only did Nevada County rank first in Exclusive Breastfeeding, our county also ranked third in the state for the Any Breastfeeding category.

Sierra Roots Hosts a Third Volunteer Training for Cold Weather Shelter

The partnership between Nevada County, Nevada City and Sierra Roots continues into this winter season in their coordinated efforts to provide Emergency Cold Weather sheltering for homeless members of our community.

In preparation for the upcoming season, Sierra Roots is holding a third volunteer training at the Nevada City Veteran Hall on Thursday, November 21st from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All returning Sierra Roots volunteers and any new member of the community interested in volunteering must attend this volunteer training session to be eligible to help during sheltering events.

Supervisor Meetings Now Offer Closed Captioning

Nevada County is pleased to announce the addition of real-time closed captioning on all Board of Supervisors meetings. Closed captioning is available on both the public television live broadcast and re-broadcasts on Channel 17 (Eastern County residents can view on channel 18.) , and on all live and archived video streaming

Closed captioning displays the audio portion of a television program as text on the TV screen, providing a critical link to public information for individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Meet Local Author, June Sylvester Saraceno, at the Truckee Library

Local author, June Sylvester Saraceno, will appear Thursday, November 21st at 5:30 p.m. at the Truckee Library, for a book reading and signing.

June Sylvester Saraceno is the author of Feral, North Carolina, 1965, her debut novel, that was listed in BuzzFeed as one of the "18 Must Read Books from Indie Presses." The Girl From Yesterday, a poetry collection, is forthcoming in January 2020 from Cherry Grove Collections. She has two previous collections of poetry in print, Of Dirt and Tar, and Altars of Ordinary Light, as well as a chapbook of prose poems, Mean Girl Trips. She serves as Humanities and English department chair at Sierra Nevada College, Lake Tahoe, where she teaches in the undergraduate and MFA in creative writing programs. She is the director of literary speaker series Writers in the Woods, and founding editor of the Sierra Nevada Review. She earned an MFA in poetry from Bowling Green State University.

The District Attorney's Office is hiring a temporary Legal Office Assistant II to support the Welfare Fraud Unit in Nevada City. This position supports investigators in the information and data collection processes. The ideal candidate must be comfortable with and well versed in the use of technology as the position includes electronic information exchanges, generation of documentation, and electronic data research. The Legal Office Assistant II temp position is half-time (20 hours per week), and closes on November 20th.
