Sierra Roots, Hospitality House and Nevada County Coordinate Homeless Services During Last Week's Cold Weather

On Tuesday November 26th, forecasted weather conditions triggered the opening of the Sierra Roots Weather Shelter. The weather conditions met criteria for the shelter to stay operational through Friday night. Building on the experience from previous years, significant improvements were made to the shelter operation including identifying a dedicated location and clarifying roles and responsibilities between Nevada City, Sierra Roots and the County.

Over the course of the weather event, both the Sierra Roots Weather Shelter and the Hospitality House shelter hit capacity. Shelter staff coordinated with the HOME team to ensure that additional individuals and families who showed up at the shelters were not turned away into the cold.

State Recognizes Nevada County Public Health for Interfaith Food Ministry Partnership

The Nevada County Public Health Department is proud to announce that our nutrition education program was recognized for "Excellence in Programs" by the California Department of Public Health. This award recognizes community collaboration and collective impact. The award recognizes the partnership between the nutrition education program and Interfaith Food Ministry (IFM), and the eight years they have been working together.

This partnership has blossomed from one-off food tastings for clients, nutrition classes and volunteer trainings to long-term policy work to influence the very foods that the pantry offers to its clients.

1st Installment of the 19/20 Nevada County Property Tax Bill Due December 10^th

Tina M. Vernon, Nevada County Treasurer and Tax Collector, would like to remind property owners that the due date for the 1st installment of the 2019-2020 secured tax bill is December 10th at 5:00 p.m. Payments must be received in the Treasurer and Tax Collector office or show a postmark of December 10th. If mailing close to this date, it is highly encouraged to hand stamp a timely postmark to ensure timely payment. If received after the December 10th date without a timely postmark, a 10% penalty will be added for late payment.

Don’t want to come up to the office? A convenient outside drive-up Drop Box is available in the parking lot of the Rood Government Center until 5:00 p.m. on December 10th. You can also make payments by mail, in-person or online.

Report Downed Trees with Ask Nevada County

The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rains and high wind gusts for Western Nevada County this Friday through Sunday and has issued a Winter Storm Warning for elevations above 5,500 feet.

Wet and windy weather can create an increased possibility of downed trees in County roadways. For road failures and trees down in the right of way during business hours call (530) 265-1411 and call 911 for any emergencies. Free Sand and Sandbags from Nevada County OES

With rain in the forecast, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) would like to remind residents that free sand and sandbags are available at four locations in Nevada City, Penn Valley, North San Juan and South County.
 
Residents must bring their own shovel to fill the sandbags with sand. Sand bags are very limited, so please only take what you plan to use for protection of your personal property.

Learn about Gray Wolves in California

Kent Laudon, wolf specialist with California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be presenting information on California's Gray Wolf, during a special joint-meeting of the Nevada County Agricultural Advisory Commission and the Nevada County Fish and Wildlife Commission on December 19, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the Board of Supervisor Chambers.

Information presented will include the gray wolf's status as an endangered species, information on California's only known established wolf pack, and tips on living with wolves.
