Cool Hand Uke’s Strum Bums Ukulele Extravaganza Rescue and Relief Band, known simply as the Strum Bums, began in 2000 as a weekly class at the Senior Center when it was located at the Nevada County Fairgrounds. Twenty or so seniors showed up for the first class. Fifteen or so continued. Today there are nearly 75 members on its email list. Join the Strum Bums on Mondays from 3:00pm-4:30pm at the Madelyn Helling Library to get your Ukulele chops ready for showtime! Local Ukulele Legend Dan Scanlan is seeking adult learners (16 ) to learn the Ukulele for Strum Bums shows around the town! You do not need to be a seasoned Ukulele player to come to these classes. Join us, Friday, February 6th for a community gathering around North Woods, this year's Nevada County Reads selection. North Woods is a Pulitzer Prize nominated historical fiction novel by author Daniel Mason. The novel explores the theme of how history imprints itself on our lives and how intertwined our lives are with the spaces that we occupy. We'll be celebrating our shared history with an oak tree planting and short presentation on Oak Trees by the Master Gardeners of Nevada County. The library will be handing out Honor Copies of North Woods, and we'll have some live music by local music legend Chris Crockett. The weather may be a little chilly, so wear warm clothes and join us for a cup of coffee, hot chocolate, or a snack! This will be a fun and casual late afternoon get together for our community to celebrate our shared history and another exciting year of Nevada County Reads! This event was made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read and the Nevada County Friends of the Library. Completion of this class is required for independent use. Sign up today! Ages 8 & up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by parent or guardian. We recommend bringing your own laptop with Bambu Studio installed, so you can gain experience using it with your personal account. A Yoga class to support flexibility, strength, breathing and overall wellness. All experience levels are welcome! A limited number of yoga mats will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own mat if they own one. This class is open to ages 16 and up. This class is taught by Grace Kendrick, E-RYT, CAS. More about Grace: Grace is an experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (e-RYT) and Certified Ayurveda Specialist (C.A.S.) holding yoga certifications through the White Lotus Foundation, Whole Birth® Prenatal Yoga, and Kundalini Research Institute (KRI). She has been on faculty at several yoga teacher trainings including the MindBody Zone and Prenatal Kriya Yoga Teacher Training both in the Bay Area, CA. As a mom, stepmom and now grandma, Grace is passionate about sharing the benefits of mindfulness to foster healthy family dynamics. She leads wellness programs and retreats internationally and is the previous owner of Grass Valley Yoga. Her classes are a poetic weaving of breath, asana and mindfulness in a flow designed to open and balance the mind, body and spirit. Grace is so excited to teach a community yoga class at the Nevada City library here in the foothills where she now calls home.
