Nevada County Celebrates Toy Run Day on Dec. 13

Nevada County will once again come together for one of its most beloved holiday traditions on Saturday, Dec. 13: Nevada County Food and Toy Run Day.

“Through the years, we have helped so many children in this community,” said organizer Shannon Buehler at the Nov. 18 Board of Supervisors meeting, where Supervisors proclaimed Dec. 13, 2025, as "Food and Toy Run” Day in Nevada County.

The event, which began in 1991 with a small group of riders supporting about 150 Head Start children, has grown into a countywide celebration of generosity—at times drawing nearly 2,000 motorcycles to the fairgrounds. Last year, nearly 700 families and 2,200 children received toys, and more than 500 families have already signed up for this year’s run. Families will also be able to take home one of 550 holiday meals, including a turkey, ham, or chicken with all the sides. Any leftover meals will be shared with Interfaith Food Ministry and the Food Bank of Nevada County for their holiday distributions.

The Toy Run is entirely volunteer-driven, requiring more than 150 helpers on event day. Local Boy Scout troops, Rotary clubs, and numerous community organizations pitch in—along with generous donors from across the region and even out of state. “Our biker community is incredibly giving,” Buehler said. “There’s nothing like being in that building when the riders start coming in.”

Support continues to grow. Platt Electric and Foothill Car Care are collecting and purchasing bicycles for children, while others are helping secure helmets. Families choose their own toys to ensure their needs are met.

County supervisors praised the event’s deep local roots and community spirit. “This one is near and dear to my heart,” said Supervisor Lisa Swarthout. “It’s one of Grass Valley’s iconic events that everyone looks forward to.” Supervisor Sue Hoek encouraged residents to help however they can: “If you can’t be there, you can donate.”
