The Board of Supervisors unanimously decided Tuesday to reduce permit fees by $1,000 for qualifying rural owner-built homes.
The discounts are available for construction of homes qualifying under Title 25, a section of state housing regulations that allow owners in rural zones to bypass certain requirements as long as minimum health and safety standards are met.
As an example, Title 25 applicants for an 1,800 square foot home will now pay an estimated $1,005.54 for a building permit as compared to $2,816.09 cost of a regular building permit, not including other permit or mitigation fees.
That portion of the fee is only a part of the estimated $24,248 total cost of regular permits for an 1,800-square-foot home. Supervisor Hardy Bullock said many of the fees are set by outside jurisdictions, like school and fire districts.
“We all welcome those conversations with other jurisdictions on how we can make it more affordable to bring properties into compliance, build new homes and get housing on the ground,” he said.
The discount was made possible because the Board approved $1,000-per-permit subsidiesies from the General Fund.
