Animal Control & Shelter Fees

Current fees went into effect on Aug. 10, 2025. Fees charged by the Nevada County Sheriff's Office Animal Control Division and the Nevada County Animal Shelter are subject to change without notice.

Impound Redemption Fees - Dogs, Cats, Sheep & Goats

Penalty for 1st offense impound (F&A 31251) plus per day boarding rate: $66 + additional $35 for unaltered dog/cat
Penalty for 2nd offense impound (F&A 31251) plus per day boarding rate: $133 + additional $50 for unaltered dog/cat
Penalty for 3rd offense impound (F&A 31251) plus per day boarding rate: $199 + additional $100 for unaltered dog/cat
Penalty for 4th offense impound (F&A 31251) plus per day boarding rate: $265 + additional $100 for unaltered dog/cat
Penalty for 5th and subsequent offenses within a 24-month period (F&A 31251) plus per day boarding rate: $331 + additional $100 for unaltered dog/cat
Other Animals: Actual Cost / Hauling and capture plus a $25 stock trailer fee

Quarantine Fee

Dogs (at shelter): $25/day up to $150 maximum
Cats (at shelter): $11/day up to $110 maximum
Quarantine Fee Other Animal (at shelter or alternate location): $25/day or per paddock up to $150 maximum.

Board Fee - Dog (First Day): $43
Board Fee - Dog (per additional day, if animal stays overnight): $15
Board Fee - Cat (First Day): $19
Board Fee - Cat (per additional day, if animal stays overnight): $11

Kennel Permit/License

Commercial Kennel License 1 to 10 animals: $109 per year, includes one inspection
Commercial Kennel License 11 to 20 or more animals: $148 per year, includes one inspection
Commercial Kennel License Late Renewal after July 31: $77 penalty
Private Kennel License 1 to 10 animals: $72 per year, includes one inspection
Private Kennel License 10 or more animals: $148 per year, includes one inspection
Private Kennel License Late Renewal after July 31: $31 penalty

Field Services Fees

Service trailer: $20 + per hour department rate

Owner Turn in at Shelter: $100/Dog, $25/Cat, $200/Lg Farm Animal, $25/Sm Farm Animal, $25/bird, $10/Sm Domestic, $25/Other (Turn in fee per dog includes up to six puppies, and for cats includes up to six kittens, under four months of age)
Rabies Testing (Animals not meeting the criteria for required testing by County): $330 or per current fee specified under contract with current service provider
Euthanasia Fee (cats/dogs, owner turn in includes disposal): $0
