We are entering such a dry and hot time of the year, that using power tools to create defensible space around your home is increasingly risky. There have been several recent fires caused by the hot muffler on a weed whacker. Please be extremely mindful of the potential risks of your choices and err on the side of caution whenever possible. If you absolutely must use power tools, work in the morning when it’s cooler, and make sure you have plumbed water and a fire extinguisher close by.
We are now in the Go! part of fire season, meaning you need to be prepared to evacuate should a fire hit your area. Please go to our new Zonehaven tool at community.zonehaven.com, where you can look up your evacuation zone. Once you know it, write it down multiple places so you won’t forget. Handy stickers and magnets are available in the Rood Center lobby and will soon be popping up at events, libraries, and fire stations throughout Nevada County.

Make sure your Go Bag is packed and refreshed. Check that medications and food are not expired and you’ve got the right sizes and supplies for everyone in the family, including pets. In the event of a fire, minutes count, so make sure to pack your Go Bag and work out evacuation plans now and communicate them to your top five trusted allies in the event of a disaster or emergency. Your five allies are people that will check on you and that you can communicate with in an emergency, so they know you are safe, or if you need help.
