Education and Outreach Resource Library

Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) has a variety of educational materials to support emergency preparedness in the community. These materials are available to be used to further emergency preparedness in Nevada County.

Please note that supplies are limited and OES will do their best to assist you in getting the materials you need.

Disaster Engagement Strategy

An important part of community engagement is delivering consistent, seasonally appropriate messaging when it's relevant, actionable, and matters most.

Wildfire Outreach and Education Wheel

Wildfire preparedness is a year-round effort, but during different times of the year, how we approach wildfire preparedness may change. The Wildfire Outreach and Education Wheel divides wildfire preparedness education into four seasons that coincide with when each topic is the most relevant.

Outreach and Education Wheel, Education & Preparedness, Mitigation, Wildfire Evacuation and planning

Quarter 1 (January-March): Education and Preparedness

Core Messaging:

  • Annual CodeRED Test
  • Planning for Fire Season

Quarter 2 (April-June): Mitigation, Implementation, and Maintenance

Core Messaging:

  • Defensible Space and Home Hardening
  • Green Waste

Quarter 3 (July-September): Wildfire, Evacuation, and Prevention

Core Messaging:

  • Wildfire and Evacuation Preparedness
  • Wildfire Prevention

Quarter 4 (October-December): Planning

Core Messaging:

  • Strategic Plans (Community Risk Assessments, CWPP, etc)
  • Project Planning and Design

Disaster Recovery Cycle

Winter storms in Nevada County can bring conditions such as heavy rainfall, heavy snowfall, blizzards, extreme wind speeds, and freezing temperatures. The aftermath of these storms also affects the fire season. The relationship between winter storms and wildfire is illustrated in the Disaster Recovery Cycle.

Wildfire and Winter Storms

Disaster: Winter Storms

Winter storms and severe weather begin to strike as fire season winds down. During this time, preparedness activities shift to be ready for winter storms.

Impact: Storm Debris and Fire Hazards

Winter storms can result in debris that causes damage to critical infrastructure, impede travel, and more. This debris is now also hazardous vegetation for the coming fire season

Response and Mitigation: Storm Debris and Hazardous Fuel Removal

In response to the impact of winter storms, storm debris removal is often a priority. Storm debris removal is both a winter storm response and a wildfire mitigation action as removing the storm debris also removes future hazardous fuel.

Recovery and Preparedness: Road Clearance and Evacuation Improvement

Storm debris removal results in recovery from the winter storm impact and preparedness for the upcoming fire season through roadside clearance.

Nevada County Virtual Office Hours

In 2022, Nevada County OES launched Virtual Office Hours to provide an educational platform to discuss and learn about all things wildfire. Since then, there have been 43 Virtual Office Hours sessions covering topics from How to Design a Project to Wildfire Fire Behavior. The sessions have been organized based on themes.

(Please note that wildfire science is constantly evolving, and Virtual Office Hour topics were researched and created using the best available information at the time )
