[ARCHIVED] Nevada County Library Announces its 2022 Summer Learning Program

SLP LOGO - 05 KMiller Emblem

Nevada County Library is pleased to announce the start of the 2022 Summer Learning program. Summer Learning is a countywide event that takes place from June 13th-August13th. Community members can enjoy fun events and reading challenges across Nevada County throughout the duration of the program.

This year’s Summer Learning theme is “Read Beyond the Beaten Path.” Nevada County Library is encouraging patrons to get outdoors and enjoy nature in addition to completing reading challenges for all ages.

Summer Learning has long had a reading log component that can be completed by adults, children, and teens. In addition to five reading challenges, this year’s Summer Learning log asks patrons to complete five outdoor activities to finish the program. There will be a prize drawing featuring local businesses for anyone who signs up for a reading log and an additional prize drawing for those completing all ten summer learning challenges! Kids and teens who complete and turn in their summer learning logs will also receive a free ride ticket for the Nevada County Fair! Paper logs can be picked up at your local branch or come and see us at the Nevada County Farmer’s Market on the 2nd and 4th weekends of the month.

For patrons who’d like to keep track of their reading log digitally, the library will offer an online application called Beanstack as a way to register, track activities, and enter the drawings for prizes. Patrons can access Beanstack at https://mynevadacounty.beanstack.com

Summer Learning also features the return of Lunch at the Library from June 13th-July 29th. During these dates, kids and teens eat lunch for free at Madelyn Helling, Grass Valley, and Penn Valley Library branches from 12 pm-1 pm, Monday through Friday. The Bear River Library Branch will have lunches on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 pm-1 pm, and The Truckee Library Branch kindly asks patrons to call 530-582-7846 for more information about its lunch program.

“Summer Learning is such a great program, and I’m so excited that we can return to in-person events with our community. I started with the library in the fall of 2019 and I loved the take-home programming we offered for Summer Learning over the last two years. However, being in-person with our patrons for indoor & outdoor events and offering free lunches here at Bear River Library is just awesome!” States Julie Valin, a Library Assistant at Bear River Library.

On Wednesday, June 22 from 4-6 pm, Madelyn Helling Library will host this year’s Summer Learning Kick-Off Party. The kick-off party will feature a special performance from musical act The Buffalo Gals, entertainment by storyteller Izzy Tooinsky, games, tabling by local partners, and reading log sign-ups.

More highlights from Summer Learning include: Bird expositions with West Coast Falconry, entertainer and storyteller Izzi Tooninsky, Musical Mondays with InConcert Sierra, Watershed Investigations with SYRCL, Wild Things Rescue, and a series of live talks with NorCal Bats.

All information & dates for the Summer Learning program can be found at www.nevadacountyca.gov/summerlearning
