Throw a frisbee, kick a soccer ball, and meet members of the new Nevada County Youth Commission at the group’s “Fun in the Foothills” event Friday, June 28 at Pioneer Park.
The event, which runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., will also have games, food, music, and booths offering information about community resources and programs, including Bright Futures for Youth, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, and Better Bites, a group working to increase local ingredients in school meals.
“First and foremost, it’s an excuse for teenagers to get out, have fun,” said Mario LaMarca, the Youth Commission member who came up with the idea. He added that all ages are welcome to attend.
Possible activities at the event will include volleyball, spike ball, a three-legged race, and squirt guns. Live bands playing rock or pop may also come. “We want to get people face to face,” LaMarca said.
Launched this year, the youth commission is made up of Nevada County students ages 14-19 who identify, connect and advocate for the issues facing Nevada County youth. For more information, visit www.NevadaCountyCa.gov/YouthCommission.
