Measles is very contagious.
Measles spreads when someone infected speaks, coughs, sneezes or breathes. It can linger in the air up to two hours after the infected person has left.
The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is effective.
Two doses provide 97% protection against measles.
Unvaccinated people are at high risk.
Roughly 90% of those unvaccinated and exposed to measles will contract the disease.

Respiratory viruses, like influenza (flu), COVID-19, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), can cause cold or flu-like symptoms, and they can cause more serious illness in some people. They are typically spread by direct contact with a person who has a respiratory virus through coughing or sneezing or indirect contact with a person who has a respiratory virus from items an infected person touched.
How Can I Protect Myself and My Community?
Stay up to date on all immunizations that are recommended for you. For more information go to Immunization for Respiratory Virus Prevention
All persons who have cold or flu-like symptoms or test positive (including asymptomatic positives):
• Stay home until you have not had a fever for 24 hours without using fever reducing medication AND your other symptoms are mild and improving.
• After returning to normal activities, do the following for 5 more days:
- Avoid those who are higher risk for severe infection. For more information go to Risk Factors for Respiratory Viruses
- Mask when around others indoors, especially when around those who are at higher risk or in a high-risk setting.
- Practice healthy habits such as covering your cough, handwashing, air ventilation, physical distancing, and testing.

Anyone who has sex could get a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Many infections have no symptoms. The only way to know is to get tested. If you’re sexually active, test at least once a year, with new or multiple sex partners, and when your partner tests positive for an STI.
