North San Juan Fire Suppression System Project

Project Overview

The North San Juan Fire Suppression Project aims to meet two main goals, the first goal is to improve public safety from threat of wildfire. The project will provide fire suppression to the downtown core of North San Juan as well as the surround residents within the zone of influence. The second is to reduce the barrier to entry for economic activity, this is due to the requirement of new businesses to demonstrate fire suppression capability.

The project includes the installation of a 330,000 gallon water storage tank and underground pipelines that will supply water to 10 fire hydrants that the North San Juan Fire Protection District (NSJFPD) will be able to use in the likely event of a wildfire. The project will also include the additional of a new water well located on the NSJFPD property that will be used to fill the water storage tank.

Once the project is fully constructed and approved, County Service Area 39 will be created to support the operation, maintenance, and replacement costs of the fire system. This new CSA was voted on and approved by the future members of the service area.

Funding

The total estimated project cost is $3.6 million, this includes planning, design, environmental, right of way, and construction. Funding will come from a variety of sources. $1.4 million in federal funds were awarded to Nevada County in the FY22 federal budget. These funds are provided via the United States Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Community Facilities Program and require a 25% local match. The County is actively applying for additional grants to fund the remainder of the project.
