Nevada County Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation (HBP) Project

Project Overview

Since 2017, Nevada County has replaced or rehabilitated 7 bridges in western Nevada County. The County is currently working on six additional bridges scheduled for replacement or rehabilitation by 2028.  These include the following (estimated construction year in parenthesis)

  • Dog Bar Road over Bear River (Construction Spring 2025) Road Closure information can be located on our Road Conditions and Closures Page.
  • ATTENTION MOTORIST:

The Dog Bar Bridge Replacement Project is moving to its next stage of construction which means the crossing of the Bear River on Dog Bar Road will become more constricted to allow construction of roadway onto the new bridge starting on 10/24.
It is recommended that truck and trailer combinations and larger vehicles utilize an alternate route during this time as the already tight turn onto the existing bridge will become even tighter. Thank you for your patience on this matter.

  • Donner Pass Road at Castle Creek Bridge (2027-2028)
  • Rock Creek Road at Rock Creek Bridge (Design 2026-2027)

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Office of Structure Investigations is responsible for performing bridge inspections in accordance with federal regulations on approximately 12,000 bridges owned by local government agencies, making structure work repair recommendations, determining the safe load capacity, etc. Caltrans inspects approximately 43 bridges in unincorporated Nevada County. Bridges that have been identified as structurally deficient may be eligible for replacement or repair under the Local Highway Bridge Program (HBP). The purpose of the HBP is to replace and rehabilitate public highway bridges that the State and Federal Highway Administration determine to be unsafe due to structural deficiencies.
